INCIDENTS

93-794 - Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) - Special Event; Filming

On November 2nd, Reel Films Productions completed the last of three non-
consecutive days of filming "Lakota Woman" in the park. The made-for-
television movie, which is tentatively scheduled to air on TNT in September,
1994, is based upon a book of the same name by Mary Crow Dog and portrays
the events leading up to and during the violent confrontation at Wounded
Knee in 1973. The short segments filmed in the park portray the occupation
of Mount Rushmore by Native Americans and their subsequent arrest and
removal from the mountain, including depiction of rough handling of the
prisoners by park rangers, state police and other agency personnel. The
actors portraying park rangers were uniformed in a facsimile of a Forest
Service uniform. As many as 150 contractors and cast and crew members were
involved in the filming at peak times. Six rangers monitored the filming
and associated activities and impacts. No significant resource damages
occurred. The production company reimbursed the Service for expenses
incurred. [Mike Pflaum, CR, MORU, 11/3]

93-795 - Martin Luther King (Georgia) - Drug Arrests

On the morning of October 25th, a ranger contacted a 15-year-old juvenile at
a park-owned residence and discovered a plastic bag containing approximately
84 rocks of suspected crack cocaine and two razor blades. The juvenile said
that he and another juvenile had entered the park in an effort to escape
pursuit by Atlanta police. The case was turned over to city police. Three
days later, the city's narcotics unit raided an apartment in the park and
arrested three people - two for selling cocaine and the third for disorderly
conduct. Rangers did not participate in the raid, but conducted preliminary
surveillance of the drug operation and provided Atlanta officers with
information on the location of sales, methods of operation, lists of
frequent customers and the identities of suspects. Efforts are continuing
to combat drug trafficking in the park. [Johnny Sims, CR, MALU, 11/1]

3) ANALYSIS - Containment targets are being met on all large fires.
Demobilization has begun from southern California fires.

4 PROGNOSIS - Strong high pressure aloft will continue off the California
coast. Surface high pressure over the Great Basin will strengthen slightly,
resulting in northwest to north winds up to 15 mph over southern California
mountain passes. Southern California will be mostly sunny with patchy
morning fog and light westerly winds during the afternoon. The potential
for escaped fires continues to decrease as winds subside.
