INCIDENTS
93-798 - Great Smokies (Tennessee/North Carolina) - Follow-up on Search
The search for M.A. continues. No clues have been found by dog
teams, trackers, or aircraft - including planes with infra-red detecting
equipment. Trackers are now checking drainages radiating from the location
where his backpack was found. Due to the absence of clues, efforts are
shifting from ground searches to investigation. [John Garrison, IC; Steve
Smith, RAD/SERO; 11/9]
93-800 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Structural Fire
A fire was spotted in the farm house at the Great Onyx Job Corps Center
around 9:30 p.m. on November 7th. The blaze was knocked down by the local
volunteer fire department, but reignited about an hour later and was finally
extinguished by the volunteer department and rangers. When Job Corps moved
to its current location in the early 1980s, the farm house was retained as
an office building. At the time of the fire, it was being renovated into
offices for Job Corps counselors. Although the fire appears to have been
started by an electrical fault, the park will have the building inspected by
an arson investigator. The building is a total loss. [MACA, 11/9]
93-801 - Ocmulgee (Georgia) - ARPA Arrest
On Sunday morning, November 7th, a patrol ranger spotted D.K.
emerging from a wooded area in the park. D.K.'s clothing and hands were
muddy and he showed signs of nervousness. When asked what he'd been doing,
D.K. said that he'd been digging for arrowheads. During the interview,
the ranger noticed a muddy plastic sheet covering items in the back of
D.K.'s Blazer. An inspection led to the discovery of camping gear, a
loaded .357 magnum revolver, and over $1.6 million in cash, gold and
platinum. At that point, D.K. changed his story; he now claimed that
he'd had this property buried in another cache some distance away, that he'd
decided to move it to a safer place, and that intended to bury it in the
park. D.K. was placed under arrest for possession of a firearm, false
reporting, and violating the Archeological Resource Protection Act. An
investigation is being conducted by the park, the FBI, the IRS and the U.S.
attorney's office. Other charges may be filed. Recent changes in the law
also permit the seizure of assets in misdemeanor, felony and civil ARPA
cases. [Superintendent, OCMU, 11/9]
