INCIDENTS

93-827 - Eisenhower (Pennsylvania) - Structural Fire

A fire was reported in a barn at one of the park's historic farms at 5 p.m.
on November 26th. Although the fire was brought under control within a half
hour, the barn, valued at about $400,000, was a total loss. Two hay wagons,
a corn picker and a brand new bailer - all privately owned - were also lost;
valuation of the equipment has been placed at a minimum of $20,000. The
fire was apparently accidentally started by two juveniles. An investigation
is being conducted by rangers, state troopers and the Adams County fire
marshall. The farm where the fire occurred was one of several owned by
President Eisenhower which are now part of the park. Neither his home nor
any of the associated buildings were threatened by the fire. [Mac Heebner,
Pete Walzer, GETT, 11/27]

FIRE ACTIVITY

Lake Meredith - A man-caused fire was ignited in the park on Saturday,
November 27th. By Saturday evening, the Plum Fire had burned 750 acres and
was expected to grow to 1,000 acres by Sunday morning. Structures were
threatened early on Saturday, but are now safe. High winds, flashy fuels,
low relative humidity and reduced holiday staff have hampered efforts to
control the fire. Five hunters from Abilene have been cited on charges
related to the fire. Two county and two city fire departments assisted the
park on Saturday, and an incident command team, a strike team of engines and
two Type II crews were expected on scene on Sunday morning. No air
resources are available. [Cliff Chetwin, RAD/SWRO]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

No field reports today.

NOTES

1) Fee Payment via Credit Cards - Acceptance of credit cards for payment of
services is becoming increasingly common in the federal government. Several
parks began accepting credit cards for entrance fee payments earlier this
year, and seven more areas will begin employing this method of payment this
winter. If you have a question on use of cards for fee collection, contact
either Mark Forbes or John Townsend at 202-208-4025; if you'd like to know
more about credit card systems, equipment, software and procedures for
processing payments, contact Steve Tisinger in AOD at 703-487-9310.
Treasury has several national contracts for such services, and Steve
Tisinger is the liaison/program administrator for the NPS. [Mark Forbes,
RAD/WASO]

2) SES Program - The Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program
(SESCDP #8 - Accelerated Track) announcement will open on December 3rd and
close on January 3rd. All GS-14s and GS-15s (and equivalent levels) are
eligible for consideration. SESCDP #8 is a full-time developmental program
that has been tentatively scheduled for the period from April 4, 1994 to
September 30, 1994. Copies of the announcement and application are
available through AVADS. For further information, contact Mario Fraire
(202-208-5093) or Lucia Bragan (202-523-5280). [Lucia Bragan, EDD/WASO]
