Ranger Activities Division Information Network
Day/Date: Thursday, December 2, 1993
Broadcast: By 0900 EDT
INCIDENTS
93-836 - Blue Ridge (North Carolina/Virginia) - Structural Fire
The Sims House, a historic structure in the Bluffs District, was lost due to
fire on the night of November 26th. Rangers and members of the Blowing Rock
fire department responded, but suppression efforts proved fruitless because
the structure was completely engulfed in flames when the first unit arrived
on scene. Preliminary investigation reveals that accelerants may have been
used at two locations to start the fire. There are no suspects at this
time. The fire is being jointly investigated by rangers and the Watauga
County fire marshall. [CRO, BLRI, 12/1]
93-837 - Lake Meredith (Texas) - Suicide
On the afternoon of November 30th, the park was notified that the family of
44-year-old S.Y. had found a note from S.Y. saying that he was
going to the Blue Creek area of the park to commit suicide. Rangers and a
county deputy subsequently found S.Y.'s body next to his vehicle near Blue
Creek campground. He apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound; a
.38 caliber handgun was found at the scene. S.Y. had been suffering from
depression. [Patrick McCrary, LAMR, 12/1]
