INCIDENTS
93-865 - Point Reyes (California) - Search
On the afternoon of December 22nd, rangers checked a vehicle which had been
parked near the Stewart Ranch for three days and found that the registered
owner, A.S., 50, was missing and reported to be at risk as a
potential suicide. Rangers and Marin County deputies began a search, but no
sign of A.S. was found that day. An expanded search was begun the
following morning; participating were rangers, 25 county SAR foot searchers,
six mounted officers, three dog teams and a Sonoma County helicopter. A
foot team spotted clothing items identified as A.S.'s on the west side of
Olema Creek at 3 p.m. They also found three types of sleeping pills,
alcohol, food and a watch. SAR dogs were brought to the search point, but
were not able to find any further clues. Search efforts concluded that
afternoon. Preparations for the coming day's search were being made that
evening when Marin County officers advised the park that they'd learned that
A.S. had been staying at an inn in Inverness, about 15 miles from where
his vehicle was found, and that he'd reportedly left the inn by bus on
December 20th. An investigation is underway. [CRO, PORE, 12/27]
93-866 - Walnut Canyon (Arizona) - Suicide
Visitors reported the discovery of a body inside a car in the park's picnic
area to the Coconino County sheriff's office on the morning of December
27th. Deputies and rangers discovered the body of a 54-year-old Phoenix man
inside the car. The man apparently took his life with a .45 caliber
handgun. A suicide note was found in his pocket. [Michael Stuckey, Acting
