INCIDENTS
94-12 - Death Valley (California) - Sewage Spill
On January 4th, a sewage treatment facility operated by Fred Harvey, the
park concessioner, breached at Furnace Creek. About three acre-feet of
effluent spilled out of the lagoon, flowed about a half mile through low
vegetation, then spread out onto the salt pan at the bottom of the valley.
The spill was stopped within two hours of discovery. A representative from
the state water resources board immediately traveled to the site and is
writing recommendations to the board which may stipulate both needed repairs
and possible penalties. A similar spill occurred in early 1993. The spill
was from the third cell of the percolation/evaporation lagoons. [RMO, DEVA,

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
No field reports today.
OPERATIONAL NOTES
1) Storm Incident Reports - Some legitimate questions have arisen about what
types of storm-related reports should be submitted to Ranger Activities as
reportable incidents, particularly as there are so many storms during the
winter. Two types are appropriate for submission - any storm-related
incident which causes significant resource damage or any closure of more
than one or two days. Storm closures of one day with few or no other
impacts need not be submitted.
MEMORANDA
