INCIDENTS

94-42 - Joshua Tree (California) - ARPA Violation

On January 28th, rangers discovered that the grave of prominent
miner/pioneer Johnny Lang at Key's View had been excavated and ransacked. A
hole five feet wide by four long by two deep was found in the grave; bones,
presumably those of Lang, were found strewn around the hole. A local BLM
archeologist was called in and the spoils pile and hole were excavated.
More remains and clothing pieces were found and collected. These will be
taken to a forensic anthropologist for identification. At this time, it
appears that only the skull and some dirt were taken from the grave. Local
media representatives were brought to the site during the archeological
excavation in an attempt to gather information about the theft from the
public. The investigation is continuing. Lang died in 1925 and was buried
at Key's View near Bill Keys, another prominent pioneer. [Todd Swain, JOTR,
2/1]

94-43 - Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio) - Serious Employee Injury

Park automotive mechanic William Gaiser was seriously injured yesterday
afternoon while working alone on a park maintenance van at central
maintenance. Gaiser was apparently conducting engine diagnostic tests with
the van ignition turned on but the engine off when gasoline in the engine
somehow caught fire and burned his right arm, face, head, airway and tongue.
Some of the burns were third degree, but most were second degree. Ranger
Matt Bland provided emergency medical assistance within minutes and was soon
joined by ranger/paramedics Cheryl Hess and Mark Plona. The Brecksville
rescue squad and a Life Flight physician provided further assistance.
Gaiser was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Cleveland. His condition
was not known at the time of the report. [Brian McHugh, CR, CUVA, 2/2]

94-44 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - EMS Incident; Life Saved

Rangers David Brennan and Nancy Mecham responded to a report of an
intoxicated female at the Grand Canyon Railway depot at 11:15 p.m. on
January 31st. They found F.B., a 50-year-old concession employee,
extremely intoxicated and suffering from severe hypothermia and facial
trauma. F.B. was taken to the park clinic; she was found to have a body
core temperature of 80 degrees and a blood alcohol level of 0.29%. The
rangers and clinic staff provided advanced life support and rewarming
therapy, after which F.B. was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where she
is now reported to be in stable condition. Investigation revealed that
F.B., who had been drinking heavily at her residence and at a concession-
operated bar, was attempting to walk home from the bar - a distance of a
quarter mile - when she fell down and was unable to get up. F.B. lay on
the ground in a secluded spot for two hours in five degree temperatures
before being discovered. It's believed that she would have died after
another hour of exposure. [Dispatch, GRCA, 1/31]

94-45 - Redwoods (California) - Search and Rescue

Three males, ages 22, 17, and 15, were reported overdue from a raft trip
down Redwood Creek at 3:00 p.m. on January 30th. An air and ground search
was initiated by rangers and Coast Guard personnel about 90 minutes later.
The raft belonging to the trio was located in Redwood Creek gorge at sunset
by a Coast Guard helicopter. Rangers continued the ground search until 1:30
a.m., then resumed it at 7:00 a.m. that morning, at which point the Humboldt
County sheriff's SAR team joined the effort. At 1:30 p.m., the three men
were found at the bottom of Dolason Prairie, two miles upslope from Redwood
Creek. All three showed signs of hypothermia and exhaustion, but were
otherwise in satisfactory condition. [Craig Johnson, CR, REDW, 2/2]

94-46 - Great Smokies (Tennessee/North Carolina) - Search; Apparent Suicide

Rangers found the body of R.S., 45, less than a mile from his
parked car and about 2,000 feet from the nearest trail at 3:00 p.m. on
January 30th. A survival blanket, a hatchet, some empty prescription
bottles bearing his name, a can of scent remover that hunters use to cover
their scent while deer hunting, and several articles of clothing were all
found near his body. R.S.'s car was first noticed on January 25th, the
same day that he mailed a suicide note to a girlfriend in Gatlinburg. An
autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death. [CRO, GRSM, 1/31]

94-47 - Big Bend (Texas) - Drug Seizure

On January 12th, Judge Roy Bean, the park narcotics detection dog, alerted
on the trunk of a vehicle belonging to visitors suspected of selling
marijuana. The visitors had solicited someone to sell guns for drugs, so
rangers and a Border Patrol officer began surveillance on the suspects.
When the dog alerted to the vehicle, a search was conducted and yielded 13
ounces of marijuana packaged for resale. According to the subjects, they
bought the marijuana in Boquillas, Mexico, and were trying to re-sell it in
the park to earn money to work their way across the country. [Bonnie
Winslow, RAD/SWRO, 1/31]

OPERATIONAL NOTES

1) Correction - Yesterday's morning report stated that climber Robert McGee
was "splintered" while being rescued from Joshua Tree. McGee was in fact
splinted, and, as far as we know, is still in one piece.
