INCIDENTS

94-81 - Martin Van Buren (New York) - Death of Superintendent

Bruce Stewart, the superintendent of Martin Van Buren, passed away on
February 17th after a long illness. Funeral services were held in the First
Presbyterian Church in Valatia, New York, last Saturday. Condolences may be
sent to his wife, Ardelle, at P.O. Box 726, Kinderhook, NY 12106. Donations
in his memory should be made to The Organ Fund, First Presbyterian Church,
Church Street, Valatia, NY 12184. [Gina Johnson, PAO, NARO, 2/22]

94-82 - Everglades (Florida) - Resource Violations

On the morning of February 13th, rangers in the park's Northwest District
(Everglades City) received a report of an abandoned commercial fishing net
inside park waters near Plover Key and found approximately 300 yards of
trammel net loaded with fish at that location. Species in the net included
nurse sharks, black tip sharks, bonnet head sharks, lemon sharks, stingrays,
skates, spotted eagle rays, cobia, black drum, pompano, catfish, horse
conch, blue crabs, stone crabs, and spider crabs. Fish originally caught in
the net were attracting other fish, which subsequently became entangled.
Commercial fisherman unlawfully fishing in the park are known to cut their
nets and flee when they believe a ranger boat may be approaching. The net
apparently was cut and abandoned several days before it was discovered.

94-83 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Drowning

B.H., 55, of Las Vegas, Nevada, fell from his boat at Callville Bay
Marina on February 20th and sank underwater before anyone could reach him.
Two divers from a nearby boat volunteered to assist rangers in the search
for the victim's body, which was recovered in 75 feet of water after about
three hours. The cause of death has not yet been determined. According to
witnesses, B.H. had just stepped from the dock onto the stern of his 34-
foot SeaRay when he apparently slipped and fell face down into the water.

94-84 - Cabrillo (California) - Serious Visitor Injury

C.I., 17, of Point Loma, California, was scaling a vertical
wall in the tidepool area of the park on the afternoon of February 19th when
a 15 to 20 pound rock dislodged, struck C.I. on the head, and caused him to
fall to rocks and water about 12 feet below. C.I. is currently in critical
condition at a city hospital; he is in a drug-induced coma, a procedure used
to reduce swelling around the brain. Doctors will bring him out of the coma
on Thursday. A thorough investigation of the accident is being conducted.
