INCIDENTS
94-115 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Follow-up on Storm Impacts
Power to most of the park was restored on Friday and Saturday, and the
occupants of eight park residences were scheduled to return to their homes
on Sunday. Generators had been used through much of the week to provide
power to the main sewage treatment plant, the park's radio repeater, and
other facilities. The headquarters campground and picnic area reopened on
Friday; cave tour operations were to return to a normal schedule on
Saturday. All roads are now open, but the ferries remain closed because of
high water. As of Friday, the water was about 38 feet above normal and six
feet over the parking lot at the Green River ferry. The river was expected
to crest at 40 feet above normal on Saturday. The process of clearing
downed trees from cemeteries, roadsides and trails will begin this week.
[Karren Brown, Acting Superintendent, MACA, 3/11]
94-116 - White Sands (New Mexico) - Search
On March 12th, M.H. of Fort Worth, Texas, became disoriented
during a sand storm while hiking in the park and became lost. M.H. had
planned his visit to the park to coincide with the passage of a major
frontal system in order to photograph the dunes and clouds. He left his
vehicle at 2 p.m. and hiked several miles into the dunes. When the front
passed, blowing sand obscured the surrounding mountains, and M.H. became
disoriented. A search was begun when rangers closing the park found
M.H.'s vehicle but were unable to find him. Due to rapidly falling
temperatures, high winds, and winter storm warnings, limited efforts were
continued throughout the night. M.H. eventually walked out to a highway
west of the park visitor center, where he was found by a passing county
deputy at 3:30 a.m. M.H. was in very good condition considering what
he'd been through. It's estimated that he'd walked over 20 miles in blowing
sand with north winds between 25 and 35 mph and temperatures near freezing.
[Bob Appling, CR, WHSA, 3/13]
94-117 - Blue Ridge (North Carolina/Virginia) - Attempted Suicide
While checking a vehicle parked in an overlook on the evening of March 7th,
rangers discovered that L.E., 26, of Asheville, North Carolina, had
ingested approximately 50 anti-depressant pills. A suicide note was also
found on the front seat of her vehicle. L.E. was immediately taken to a
local hospital, where the medical staff concluded that the rangers' quick
response had provided them with a critical window of time enabling them to
successfully treat her condition. [CRO, BLRI, 3/10]
