INCIDENTS

94-163 - Timucuan (Florida) - Assault on Ranger

Around 5 a.m. on Sunday morning, commissioned ranger Brian Peters, who lives
in the park, heard his dogs barking. When he looked out his window, he saw
three men in the area. He went out and talked to the men, who said they
were looking for a friend on LSD, then escorted them out of the park. They
returned shortly thereafter, and two of them jumped Peters. Although Peters
was beaten up, he did not lose his weapon during the fracas. The men
subsequently left. Peters was taken to a hospital for observation, and is
reported to be doing well. The local sheriff's office is investigating. A
critical incident stress debriefer will be sent to the park to work with
Peters. Additional details to follow. [Bill Springer, RAD/SERO, 4/18]

94-164 - Jefferson National Expansion (Missouri) - Flooding

Heavy localized rain in Missouri caused the Mississippi River to flood areas
in and around the park last week. As of Wednesday, the river was at 30.6
feet, about a half foot over the road at the bottom of the Grand Staircase.
A crest of 39 feet was expected for Thursday - only ten feet below the
maximum flood level reached last summer. Power was shut off to light
fixtures along the bottom third of the staircase in anticipation of
flooding, and barricades for visitor control were set up. The flooding was
expected to be of short duration, as the associated weather system was in
the process of moving out of the area at the time of the report. Most of
the flood waters came down the Missouri River. [Ben Holmes, RAD/MWRO, 4/13]
