INCIDENTS

94-207 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Rescue

Backcountry rangers received a report at 9:30 p.m. on April 30th that
hiker C.S., 48, had suffered a serious fall on the Blue
Springs route. The steep and exposed route is located along the Little
Colorado River, 32 miles southeast of the park's East Entrance Station.
C.S. had fallen off a fifty foot dry waterfall while traversing near
the edge, but had survived the fall, partly because she landed on her
external frame pack. She suffered compound wrist and humerus fractures
and several avulsions and lacerations. At the request of the county
sheriff's department, a rescue team of three rangers drove to the
trailhead by four-wheel drive vehicle, but was unable to descend the
route in the dark due to the hazardous terrain. Rescue operations
resumed at first light the next morning, when the park's helicopter
arrived from the South Rim with a short haul rescue team. Two IEMT park
medics were short hauled to the patient and were able to stabilize her
injuries. She was then lifted to a landing zone on the rim, transferred
to an air rescue helicopter, and taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center
for treatment. [Ken Phillips, CR, GRCA, 5/5]

94-208 - Pea Ridge (Arkansas) - Attempted Suicide

Just before 5 p.m. on May 5th, ranger John Knox stopped to check a
vehicle parked on the grass adjacent to the tour road in the northwest
corner of the park. Knox found a suicide note in the vehicle; while
reading it, he heard a gunshot in the nearby woods. Knox called for
assistance. Superintendent Steve Adams responded, and the two
subsequent located the victim, 53-year-old J.W.L. of Bella
Vista, Arkansas, near a wooded trail about 50 feet from the tour road.
J.W.L. had shot himself under the chin with a .357 magnum derringer, but
was still alive. He was medevaced to a hospital in Springdale, where he
is listed in critical condition. J.W.L.'s vehicle had a Vietnam veteran
plate on the front bumper. He had also been seen earlier in the park in
conjunction with a Vietnam memorial display. A CISD debriefing is being
scheduled for the involved personnel. [Tony Bonanno, RCR, RAD/SWRO,
