INCIDENTS

94-272 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Rescue

G.L.S., 31, was seriously injured on June 5th when he dove off a
25 foot cliff near the launch ramp at Government Wash and landed on his head
in shallow water less than a foot deep. G.L.S. was assisted by two park
visitors at the scene, who then employed a recently-installed solar powered
emergency telephone at the launch ramp to summon help. Rangers and the park
rescue team stabilized G.L.S., after which he was medevaced by helicopter
to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he is in critical
condition. One of the visitors who provided initial aid, an Air Force
security policeman, reported that he'd seen G.L.S. prior to the accident,
and that G.L.S. had been intoxicated. [Bud Inman, LAME, 6/6]

94-273 - Harpers Ferry (West Virginia) - Rescue

On May 29th, R.W., 23, of Ashburn, Virginia, was free climbing by
himself on the east side of Maryland Heights when he fell between 60 and 80
feet and sustained fractures to his ribs, pelvis, leg and ankle. Responding
rangers stabilized R.W. and evacuated him by helicopter to the University
of Maryland's shock-trauma center. A full recovery is expected. [Terry
Hall, HAFE, 6/6]

94-274 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Rescue

L.B., a 35-year-old rock climber, from Dayton, Ohio, was attempting
a 5.9 climb called "The Layback" on Bridge Buttress on the morning of June
5th when he fell from the cliff. L.B. was on belay, but fell about 15
feet, landed on a ledge with his right foot before the belay could arrest
his fall, and sustained a fractured ankle. The belayer lowered him to the
bottom of the cliff, stabilized his injury, then went to the Canyon Rim
visitor center for help. Rangers arrived shortly thereafter, provided
medical treatment and transported him by litter to a waiting ambulance.
L.B. is currently in a hospital in Oak Hill, where he is being treated.
[Rick Brown, DR, Canyon District, NERI, 6/6]

94-275 - Colonial (Virginia) - Serious Visitor Injury

Early on the afternoon of June 4th, L.M., 50, of Montpelier, Virginia,
was riding his horse alongside a tour road on the Yorktown battlefield when
he apparently struck an overhanging branch, fell from his horse, and
sustained serious head injuries. L.M. was stabilized by local paramedics,
then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Norfolk. At the time of the
report, he was reported to be in serious condition. [Jim Burnett, CR, COLO,
6/6]

94-276 - C & O Canal (Maryland/D.C.) - Attempted Assault

On the evening of Sunday, June 5th, a park ranger on patrol in the Point of
Rocks area encountered L.B., 46, on the canal crossover bridge. L.B.
was under the influence and had narrowly escaped being run over by a passing
vehicle moments earlier while passed out on the bridge. The ranger
recognized L.B. from an encounter two nights earlier at the same location,
at which time he'd escorted L.B. off park property. As before, L.B. was
acting erratically, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and/or
narcotics, was uncooperative, and made references to his military hand-to-
hand combat experience. When the ranger advised L.B. that he was going to
be cited, L.B. began to verbally threaten him, then prepared to strike him.
The ranger displayed his OC pepper spray and ordered L.B. to stop advancing
four times; when L.B. continued to advance, the ranger sprayed and subdued
him, placed him under arrest, took him to a local hospital for treatment,
then had him incarcerated under a $1,500 bond. L.B., who has an extensive
criminal history, including disorderly conduct and narcotics convictions,
was so familiar at the detention center that he was on a first name basis
with the guards. The trail date is June 17th. [Kevin FitzGerald, CHOH,
6/7]

94-277 - Canaveral (Florida) - Disorderly Conduct; Assault

On June 3rd, ranger Brent McGinn contacted a man and woman in the North
District regarding closure, sexually-oriented disorderly conduct, and under
the influence violations. While being detained for a field sobriety test,
the man attempted to punch McGinn in the face, and a scuffle ensued. The
woman was directed to stay out of the fracas and did so. McGinn's assailant
was finally subdued and arrested. McGinn was treated at the scene for minor
abrasions; his assailant complained that he had been injured and could not
walk, so he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, where he was
examined, treated for abrasion and back pains, and released. Following
consultation with the U.S. attorney's office, both the man and woman were
issued mandatory appearance citations for disorderly conduct and closure
violations. A determination will be made this week as to whether or not to
file an assault complaint against the man. The decision will be based on
the U.S. attorney's current workload; aggressive pursuit of the charge is
not expected. [Bill DeHart, CR, CANA, 6/7]
