INCIDENTS
94-250 - City of Rocks (Idaho) - Follow-up on Larceny Arrests
On May 21st, S.H., 22, R.H., 18, J.C., 18, and
a juvenile, all from Blackfoot, Idaho, were arrested for the theft of
technical climbing equipment from several vehicles at campsites in the park.
An investigation led to the recovery of stolen property valued at over
$7,200, and the four men were subsequently charged with grand theft under
Idaho state code. Several days after being released on bond, R.H.
and J.C. were caught breaking into two vehicles at a trailhead
at a state park and attempting to steal climbing equipment within them.
Further investigation of the May 21st burglaries led to the discovery of
evidence linking the Idaho men to other climbing equipment thefts which have
occurred in City of Rocks since March. On June 8th, the four men admitted
to committing six thefts in addition to the three incidents which led to
their May 21st arrest. The stolen property, valued at about $15,000, has
been recovered. All four pled guilty to felony larceny charges and are
awaiting sentencing. [Maura Longden, CIRO, 6/27]
94-335 - Rocky Mountain (Colorado) - Helicopter Crash
An Orion Helicopter Bell 206L3 from Fort Collins crashed high on the slope
of Halletts Peak on the evening of Saturday, June 25th, during a technical
rescue for an injured climber. None of the three people on board were
injured. The Office of Aircraft Safety is investigating. [Kris Holien,
ROMO, 6/27]
94-336 - Yosemite (California) - Multiple Rescues
Just before 4 p.m. on June 23rd, T.C., 19, the operator and sole
occupant of a pickup truck, collided head on with a full-sized charter tour
bus in the middle of the Wawona tunnel. T.C. sustained massive injuries
and was pinned in the wreckage; after being extricated and receiving
advanced life support at the scene, he was taken by ambulance to the park's
medical clinic, where he coded twice before being stabilized enough to be
evacuated by air to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto. At last report, he
was in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. Although
the bus sustained considerable front end damage, none of its occupants were
injured. At almost the same time, rangers completed several other SARs in
Yosemite Valley, including the evacuation of two young men who had scrambled
about 1200 feet vertically up Washington's Column without ropes or any other
protection and with no prior climbing experience, the location of two
separately lost children on the Vernal/Nevada Falls trail who were several
hours overdue, and a response up the Four Mile trail to search for an
elderly woman reported to suffering from medical problems. Then, around 8
p.m., rangers were called to another motor vehicle accident, this time at
the west end of Yosemite Valley. A single vehicle with two occupants had
gone off the road on a curve, glanced off a tree, and rolled over an
embankment, almost ending up in the Merced River. A litter evacuation was
required for one of the injured occupants, who was subsequently medevaced by
air to the hospital in Modesto. The day concluded with the sole on-duty
ranger responding to a psilocybin mushroom party in Little Yosemite Valley,
confiscating the remaining mushrooms from two wilderness users whom other
campers had complained about regarding alleged bizarre behavior, and
detoxing the two campers. [Jim Tucker, YOSE, 6/27]
94-337 - Acadia (Maine) - MVA with Fatality
S.G., 29, of nearby Northeast Harbor, was killed in a single vehicle
accident which occurred on the park loop road near the Jordan Pond House at
1:15 a.m. on June 25th. S.G. was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected
through the BMW's sunroof. His father, G.G., 52, was a passenger
in the vehicle, but sustained only minor injuries. Alcohol and speed may
have been contributing factors. Rangers are investigating the accident with
the assistance of Maine state troopers. [Rob Yates, DR, ACAD, 6/27]
94-338 - Chickasaw (Oklahoma) - MVA with Fatality
Around 5 a.m. on June 26th, an '81 Jeep Scrambler was heading west on the
Point Campground Road at a high rate of speed when the driver - D.D.,
27, of Sulphur, Oklahoma - lost control and failed to negotiate a
sharp curve. The Jeep ran off the roadway, sideswiped two trees, then
overturned. D.D. was killed on impact. His passenger, C.C., 22, of
Phoenix, Arizona, was taken to a hospital in Oklahoma City. C.C. underwent
extensive brain surgery later that day, and remains in critical condition.
Speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident. [Bandurski,
ACR, CHIC, 6/27]
94-339 - Curecanti (Colorado) - MVA with Fatality
Just after ten p.m. on June 24th, three fishermen saw a Ford Bronco go over
the guard rail along Highway 50, flip over the embankment, and sink in the
waters of the lake 150 feet west of Beaver Creek. No one emerged from the
vehicle. An interagency rescue effort was soon initiated. Rangers on a
patrol boat worked search patterns looking for victims while dive crews
searched the waters and other rangers searched the shores. The Bronco was
removed from the water, but no one was found within it. Just after 3 a.m.,
a diver found the body of T.S., an officer for the Gunnison Sheriff's
Department. Despite hopeful efforts, T.S. was pronounced dead at the
scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation. [CURE, 6/27]
94-340 - Buffalo (Arkansas) - Rescue
On the morning of June 26th, J.F., age 19 or 20, of Elm Springs,
Arkansas, apparently lost his grip on a rope while rappelling with a friend
and fell an unknown distance from the top of Hemmed-in-Hollow. J.F.
suffered back injuries, possible internal injuries, rope burns on his hands,
and severe lacerations to his hands. An interagency rescue was initiated;
J.F. was transported about a mile to a helicopter landing spot, where he
was flown by helicopter to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. [Carl Hinrichs,
CR, BUFF, 6/27]
94-341 - Indiana Dunes (Indiana) - Special Event
On Monday, June 20th, about 900 German soccer fans who have been touring the
country with Germany's World Cup soccer team visited the park at the
invitation of local promoters. A beer garden and picnic was hosted on
private land immediately adjacent to the park's West Beach unit. Advance
information indicated that about 2,500 fans could be expected, along with a
number of uninvited soccer "hooligans". Because of the potential for
disruptive incidents and associated public safety concerns, a special event
team from Midwest Region and two mounted rangers from Jefferson National
Expansion were assigned to the park. The one day event went smoothly,
however, and there were no unusual incidents. Most of the attendees,
unaccustomed to the area's high heat and humidity, were content to spend
there time under the shade of the trees near the park's guarded beach.
