INCIDENTS

94-347 - Klondike Gold Rush (Alaska) - Special Event

On June 28th, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police presented a plaque to the
city of Skagway commemorating the centennial of the establishment of the
first Northwest Mounted Police post in northwest Canada. The event, which
is the first in a series of Gold Rush centennial activities, included a
parade, an inspection of troops, and a presentation ceremony. Participants
included 20 RCMP member in 1890s period costume and another 20 in modern
uniforms. Dignitaries from Alaska, Skagway, Yukon Territory and Canada were
present. The park worked with the RCMP in planning the event and provided
traffic control and logistical support. The dedication of the plaque was
held on the park's visitor center boardwalk. An estimated 6,000 people
attended the event. [Bruce Reed, KLGO, 6/30]

94-348 - Cape Cod (Massachusetts) - Near Drowning; Rescue

J.P.A.A., 51, was swimming with a friend in Ryder Pond in the
park's North District on the afternoon of June 27th when he began flailing
his arms. G.G., J.P.A.A.'s companion, at first thought he was only
engaging in horseplay, but soon noticed that he'd disappeared. G.G. swam
out into the pond and pulled J.P.A.A. to shore. CPR was initiated by first
responders; a pulse was regained after defibrillation. J.P.A.A. is
currently in critical condition in a hospital in Hyannis. Alcohol may have
been a factor. [Gene Valli, DR, North District, CACO, 6/30]

94-349 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Bike Accident; Rescue

On the morning of June 23rd, L.G. of Langley, Virginia was biking
downhill with friends on the Minden-Thurmond trail, an old railroad grade
with railroad trestles, when she collided with a fellow biker in front of
her who had abruptly stopped just before a trestle. L.G. went over her
bike's handlebars and the trestle, and fell into a ravine 30 feet below.
Rangers responded, stabilized L.G., and conducted a low angle carryout up
to the trail and then to a waiting ambulance. L.G. had no broken bones,
but was held overnight at a local hospital for observation. She was wearing
a helmet at the time of accident. [Rick Brown, DR, Canyon District, NERI,
6/30]

5) CURRENT SITUATION - Initial attack activity continued yesterday
throughout most of the West. Shortages of initial attack resources are
being reported in the Southwest, Rockies and Great Basin. Fire restrictions
of some sort are in effect in most of the West. Fire indices are very high
to extreme in most areas in the Southwest, Great Basin, Rockies and
California. Containment of several large fires in California has made some
critical resources available to the Southwest. Good progress was made on
large fires in the Great Basin and Rockies; some were contained. Large fire
activity continues to plague the Southwest; although several fires there
were contained, new ignitions are escaping initial attack faster than
resources are able to respond. Eight MAFFS units will move from California
to the Southwest this morning.

6) OUTLOOK - A strong high pressure system remains in place over southern
Arizona and New Mexico and near record temperatures will continue.
Scattered afternoon lightning is forecast. The influence of a storm moving
into Canada and the Northwest will bring slightly cooler temperatures and
increased winds in that area and to California, Nevada and Utah. Fire
activity is expected to increase with continued hot and dry conditions and
the increased risk of human-caused fires during the holiday weekend.
