INCIDENTS

94-520 - Gates of the Arctic (Alaska) - Follow-up on Probable Drowning

The body of M.W., who had been missing since an August 26th
rafting accident, was found by searchers on September 16th near the village
of Shungnak. This is approximately 90 miles downstream from the point on
the upper Kobuk River where he was last seen. [Glenn Sherrill, CR, GAAR,
9/16]

94-558 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Tropical Storm

A tropical storm which struck the island of Hawaii over the weekend and
didn't depart for 48 hours deposited 17 inches of rain in the headquarters
area. During the first 24 hours, the Hilina Pali rain gauge recorded over
14 inches of rain, and the village of Glenwood, which is located between the
park and Hilo, recorded 19 inches of rain. Highway 11 to the west of the
park is still closed. Local flooding occurred in the park and caused about
$6,000 in damage to the Jaggar Museum. One park employee who lives adjacent
to the park had his house hit twice by lightning, which destroyed all
electronics in the residence. [Jim Martin, Superintendent, HAVO, 9/20]

94-559 - Puukohola Heiau (Hawaii) - Drowning

Just after 7 p.m. on September 18th, S.H., 68, apparently drowned
while fishing along the park's coastline. S.H. and a companion, Domingo
Rodriguez, both local residents, were night fishing by lantern light near
Paumoa point, about a five minute walk from the park's picnic area.
Rodriguez said that he found S.H. floating unconscious in the water,
pulled him to the shore, then ran to get help from a ranger. Local police
and rescue units were summoned, but were unable to revive him. [Gordon
Joyce, CR, PUHO, 9/19]

94-560 - Glen Canyon (Utah/Arizona) - Drowning

On the evening of September 14th, a four-year-old girl drowned while playing
in the main swimming pool at Wahweap Lodge. The victim and her family,
residents of nearby Big Water, Utah, were using the pool, even though it is
only open to guests. The girl's mother, M.D., left the child
and her six-year-old brother under the oversight of a friend, M.H.,
while she went back to her residence. Shortly after M.H. entered the pool
with her own child, guests heard her cry out for help. Two of them
responded and found the boy face down in the pool. They pulled him out,
administered the Heimlich maneuver, and revived the boy. While this was
happening, they noticed that M.H. was standing in five feet of water with
two children in her arms - her own child and her friend's daughter, who was
limp and not breathing. Rangers in a park ambulance and Page fire
department personnel in a second ambulance arrived on scene shortly
thereafter and began CPR, which was continued until the child was pronounced
dead at the Page hospital about an hour later. [Phil Hibbs, DR, GLCA, 9/18]

94-561 - Blue Ridge (Virginia/North Carolina) - Arrest for Assault

Five individuals in a truck parked along the parkway on the evening of
September 13th got into a physical altercation. Two of them - A.S.,
25, and P.W., 37, both of Swannanoa, North Carolina - continued
fighting as they got out of the vehicle, and Williams sustained a stab wound
in her lower left leg. A park ranger who'd just concluded his shift was
passing by when the incident occurred; he took control of the scene and
radioed for assistance. Deputies, rangers and EMS personnel responded.
P.W. was transported and received medical attention; A.S. was arrested
and charged with several offenses, including assault. Alcohol was a
contributing factor. [CRO, BLRI, 9/18]
