INCIDENTS
94-573 - Big South Fork (Kentucky/Tennessee) - Drug Seizure; Arrests
During the period from August 15th to September 8th, an interagency team
comprised of representatives from the NPS, Forest Service, Kentucky state
police, McCreary and Scott county sheriffs' offices and Army conducted a
marijuana eradication operation in the park. The latter supplied UH-1 and UH-
60 helicopters. About 95 plots and 9,100 plants were eradicated; arrests and
asset forfeitures are pending. [Dave Panebaker, Acting CR, BISO, 9/26]
94-574 - Canaveral (Florida) - Drug Seizure; Arrest
On Sunday, September 25th, ranger Brent McGinn, who was working in plain
clothes, received a report of a suspicious person in a beach parking area.
McGinn found J.D. sitting in a vehicle, holding a marijuana pipe. When
asked if he had any to share, J.D. said that he was in the park to sell
marijuana, and that he had two pounds of "Gainesville Green" to offer. McGinn
agreed to purchase a sample from J.D., learned that the rest could be seen at
his home in Orlando, then arrested him. The subsequent search of the vehicle
led to the recovery of a half ounce of marijuana and ten grams of crystal
methamphetamine. Local drug task force investigators were notified and
coordinated the seizure in Orlando. State felony charges were filed for
possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of
methamphetamine. (Bill DeHart, CR, CANA, 9/26)
94-575 - Delaware Water Gap (New Jersey/Pennsylvania) - Drug Seizure; Arrest
During overflight operations on August 26th, a marijuana field was located near
Walpack Center in the park's New Jersey district. Electronic surveillance of
the patch was begun, and a video camera subsequently taped tending activity in
the patch. On September 25th, a team of rangers began watching the field.
Just after 11 a.m., G.T., 53, parked his vehicle near the area and
walked into the patch carrying a saw. After he'd harvested half the plants and
placed them in the trunk of his car, the members of the team identified
themselves and made the arrest. The operation was conducted jointly with
Sussex County officers, who filed numerous state charges against G.T.,
including two felony counts for cultivation and possession with intent to
distribute. The cash value of the prime sensimilla plants was placed at
$40,000. [Barry Sullivan, Acting CR, DEWA, 9/26]
94-576 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Drug Seizure; Arrests
Investigators, rangers and a DEA agent arrested two people for cultivating
marijuana in the parks Kau Desert area on September 24th. They also seized 54
plants, fertilizer, and other cultivation materials. The arrests mark the
culmination of a four-month-long investigation in which various surveillance
techniques were employed. Assistance in the form of personnel and equipment
was also received from Alaska Region and the Washington Office. [Scott Hinson,
WRO, 9/25]
94-577 - Wilson's Creek (Missouri) - MVA with Fatality
Around 1:30 a.m. on the morning of September 25th, S.W., 18, of
Nixa, Missouri, lost control of his vehicle while driving in the park, slid on
a curve, and struck a driveway culvert across from the park's maintenance yard.
He was found by a maintenance employee at 5:15 a.m., and local authorities were
summoned. S.W. was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was the son of
the town's mayor. [Mac Berg, Superintendent, WICR, 9/26]
