INCIDENTS
93-724 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Follow-up on Poaching
In late September, C.B., 24, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was indicted by a
federal grand jury on three counts associated with the killing of a large elk
on the night of September 18, 1993. The poaching incident was highly
publicized by regional and national news media, in part because the large bull
elk had been readily visible from the road during rut and had been the center
of attention for numerous wildlife photographers and cinematographers. The elk
was shot during the night and its antlers were removed. The indictment
followed a year-long cooperative investigation involving Yellowstone rangers,
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Wyoming State Crime Lab, the FBI and
the U.S. Attorney's Office. C.B. was arrested by FBI agents in Salt Lake City
on Sunday, September 25th. [Mike Murray, ACR, YELL, 10/6]
94-593 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Poaching
Rangers in the Lamar subdistrict received a report from a concerned citizen on
September 21st regarding an elk poaching incident that had occurred in the park
north of Sliver Gate two days previously. The citizen identified H.S.,
67, of West Yellowstone, as a possible suspect. Investigating rangers found
the remains of a cow elk covered with branches and debris about a half mile
inside the park boundary about two miles north of the northeast entrance. They
also discovered a travois which had been made from trees freshly cut near the
road at Silver Gate and had apparently been used in the incident. Rangers
interviewed H.S., who admitted killing the elk, but said that he thought he
was outside the park when he shot the animal. H.S. was charged with illegally
killing the elk and with destroying and removing plants. He pleaded not guilty
before the U.S. magistrate at his initial appearance, and is scheduled to go on
trial in early November. [Mike Murray, ACT, YELL, 10/6]
94-594 - Olympic (Washington) - Two Falling Fatalities
On Sunday, October 4th, the park received notice that two hikers - A.G.,
40, a structural firefighter from Seattle, and L.S., 41, of
Renton - were overdue from a hike in the park. Both had come to Olympic on
Friday night and were to have returned home Saturday afternoon; when A.G.
failed to report to work on Sunday morning, the park was notified. A.G.'s
supervisor reported that A.G. was a good cross-country hiker and was never
late for work. His camping equipment was found at the campground at Olympic
Hot Springs, and a hasty search of area trails was begun. On Monday morning,
30 searchers, three dog teams and a helicopter joined the search effort. The
bodies of the two hikers were found at the base of a cliff not far from the
trailhead shortly thereafter. Investigators believe that the two were hiking
at night, that one fell off the 200-foot cliff, and that the other was killed
while attempting a rescue. [Larry Nickey, Emergency Operations, OLYM, 10/6]
94-595 - Natchez Trace (Mississippi/Alabama/Tennessee) - MVA with Fatality
On the morning of October 1st, S.L.W., 19, an escapee from the city
jail in Greenwood, Mississippi, lost control of the stolen vehicle he was
driving and hit a tree at milepost 120. S.L.W., the only occupant of the
vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. [Gordon Wissinger, CR, NATR, 10/7]
