INCIDENTS
94-632 - Mount Rainier (Washington) - Successful SAR
On Sunday, November 6th, rangers rescued skier V.G., 23, of
Tacoma, who'd failed to return from a ski trip to the Muir Snowfield which had
begun the previous day. V.G. and a friend, Scott Houghton, had ascended
to the Anvil Rock area above Paradise, then had become separated while skiing
downhill. Two rangers searched the area as far as Glacier Vista on Saturday
evening, but were unable to find him. Houghton and three rangers resumed the
search the following morning, and found V.G. in the vicinity of the
Moraine trail that afternoon. Although he suffered a minor hip injury and had
broken a ski binding, he was able to walk from the area. Rangers were assisted
by eight people from Tacoma Mountain Rescue and two from Rainier
Mountaineering. [Bill Larson, MORA, 11/6]
94-633 - Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) - Sexual Assault
Just after dusk on November 1st, a 24-year-old female jogger was attacked from
behind while running on Outerline Defence Drive, forced into the nearby woods,
and sexually assaulted. The attacker, who was concealed in a wooded area some
distance from the roadside, was naked except for white sneakers. He forced her
to walk a distance of about 200 yards into the woods, undressed her, then made
her walk an additional 200 yards to a point where he assaulted her. Following
the attack, he walked her back to her clothing, then back to the original point
of attack. A short time later, two walkers saw the victim walking on the
multi-purpose trail and assisted her back to her vehicle and then to the ranger
station. Visitation at the time of the incident was unusually light due to the
passage of a weather front causing heavy rain, high winds and a sudden drop in
temperature. A composite drawing has been prepared and distributed.
Canvassing of park users over subsequent days resulted in several leads, as
have news and television reports of the incident. Investigation of the incident
is being conducted jointly with the Tredyffrin township police department.

94-634 - Great Smokies (North Carolina/Tennessee) - MVA with Fatality
On November 5th, T.L., 21, of Dandridge, Tennessee, was driving a
late model Honda CRX northbound on the spur road that connects Gatlinburg with
Pigeon Forge when he lost control of the car and skidded down an embankment
into the river. He was taken to the University of Tennessee hospital, where he
was pronounced dead on arrival. T.L. was the son of a Tennessee state
trooper. [Jason Houck, CR, GRSM, 11/7]
