INCIDENTS
94-668 - Blue Ridge (North Carolina/Virginia) - Attempted Poaching Arrest
Rangers from the Gillespie Gap District, working with two North Carolina
wildlife officers, set up a dummy deer at the edge of the parkway last week in
response to reports of an individual spotlighting and hunting in the park. At
1:15 am on December 7th, a pickup with two people in it passed the deer decoy.
The driver turned the truck and aimed its lights at the decoy; the passenger
then got out and fired a single shot at it. A chase ensued and culminated in
the arrest of the driver, a security guard at a local firm. Neither the
passenger nor the weapon were in the vehicle. The rifle was subsequently found
in the woods near the scene of the incident. Charges brought before the
magistrate included illegal hunting in the park, failure to stop, and making
false statements to an officer. [CRO, BLRI, 12/9]
