INCIDENTS
94-669 - Crater Lake (Oregon) - Rescue
On the afternoon of December 7th, Klamath Falls police advised the park that
they'd received a call for help from two skiers via cellular phone and ham
radio. The skiers said that they were exhausted from traveling in deep snow,
that they were concerned about avalanche danger, and that one of them was
suffering from pain from an artificial hip. A four-person park rescue team
headed out to find them the following morning and contacted the two men early
in the afternoon. Both were in good condition and were able to ski out on
their own. The pair had headed out on a trip around the rim on December 4th.
Although informed of conditions, they didn't appreciate the degree of effort
required to break trail through soft snow (the park received a record snowfall
of about 190 inches in November). They were closely counseled about winter
skiing realities before being released. [George Buckingham, CR, CRLA, 12/12]
94-670 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - MVA with Fatality
On December 12th, park dispatch received a report of an erratic driver in the
vicinity of the Katherine's Landing access road. Responding rangers discovered
a single-car rollover accident. The operator, 45-year-old R.H. of
Tucson, Arizona, was critically injured and was air-lifted from the park to a
local trauma center. He died the following morning from injuries sustained in
the accident. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor. [Grace Gerken,
LAME, 12/13]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Gettysburg/Eisenhower (Pennsylvania) - Deer EIS
A draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) proposing deer management at
Gettysburg and Eisenhower was released on November 30th. Management objectives
for maintaining the landscapes of the parks have been developed so visitors can
better understand the historic events that took place at each park. Certain
components of the landscapes are being adversely affected by white-tailed deer
browsing, which is keeping the parks from meeting these objectives. Active
management of deer browsing is proposed so these landscape management
objectives may be met. The preferred alternative is to manage the deer
browsing by a combination approach that would reduce the number of deer in the
parks. Authorized personnel would shoot deer in the parks, and public hunting
opportunities outside the parks would be increased. These methods, and
reproductive intervention when approved for use in deer population management,
would be used annually to maintain the deer population at the reduced density.
Comments on the DEIS must be postmarked by February 10, 1995 and sent to the
Superintendent, Gettysburg National Military Park, 97 Taneytown Road,
Gettysburg, PA 17325. For further information or copies of the document, write
to the park or call Hal Greenlee (717)-334-0909. [Hal Greenlee, GETT]
