RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Organ Pipe Cactus (Arizona) - Wildlife Surveys and Tagging
During the months of November and December, Arizona Game and Fish Department
(AGFD) biologists and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and National Park Service
resource management personnel conducted two projects in and around Organ Pipe
Cactus. The first was an aerial survey of the park's mountain ranges for
bighorn sheep. About 60 animals were counted, most of them rams. The
population appeared to be very healthy and doing well. The second was the
capture and collaring of numerous Sonoran pronghorns (an endangered species) on
both the monument and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. This project
has been undertaken to enable biologists to monitor habitat range on both sides
of the border. A summary report is being prepared by AGFD as a part of the
cooperative agreement underlying these surveys. [Jon Arnold/Aniceto Olais,
