INCIDENTS

94-695 - Lassen Volcanic (California) - Burglaries

On the morning of December 29th, North District rangers discovered that their
office and a visitor's vehicle had been burglarized and that a park restroom
had been vandalized.  Rangers soon located and contacted a hitchhiker who'd
been seen in the area the night before.  The man, later identified as T.S.
of Portland, Oregon, admitted to both the burglaries and the
vandalism.  T.S. was arrested and transported to a jail in Redding. 
Investigation revealed that he has a long history of related offenses.  [Bryan

94-696 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Probable Suicide

A park visitor reported seeing personal property and footprints leading to the
canyon rim at Powell Memorial off West Rim Drive around 5 p.m. on December
30th.  The body of C.W., 25, was found about 500 feet below the
rim the following morning.  It appears that C.W. jumped to his death, but an
investigation is still underway.  [Karyn Shinkle, Dispatch, GRCA, 1/1]

94-670 - George Washington Parkway (Virginia) - Highway Closure

Construction workers accidentally broke a 16-inch water line under the north
bound lane of the parkway on the afternoon of December 28th, forcing the
closure of the highway and creating a major traffic disruption throughout the
metropolitan Washington area.  Sections of the parkway were closed until
midnight on December 29th.  [Julia Hewitt, RAD/NCRO, 12/29]
