INCIDENTS

95-28 - Glacier (Montana) - Poaching Arrest

J.S.R., 20, of Cut Bank, Montana, was charged in federal court last
week with the illegal shooting and killing of a four-point bull elk near
Snowslip Mountain on November 20, 1994. Rangers received two anonymous tips
about the poaching the day J.S.R. allegedly killed the elk, and a third tip a
few days later. A joint investigation by rangers and state game wardens was
begun, which culminated with an interview of J.S.R. at his residence and the
execution of a search warrant at another location. J.R., 46, J.S.R.'s
father, will be charged with aiding in the transportation of the illegally-
taken animal. [Amy Vanderbilt, PAO, GLAC, 1/23]

95-29 - Harry S Truman (Missouri) - Recovery of Stolen NPS Weapon

On June 1, 1994, a daytime burglary was committed at the park residence of the
site's only law enforcement ranger, who was off duty and not at home at the
time. The ranger's .357 revolver was taken in the burglary. It was
subsequently entered in NCIC as stolen, and was recovered on January 23rd when
Kansas City police executed a search warrant for drugs in a residence in that
city. Four people were arrested in the raid. [Rich Murphy, RLES, RAD/MWRO,

95-30 - Saguaro (Arizona) - Car Clouting Arrest

Since early last year, there have been numerous auto burglaries at trailheads
in the park's Tucson Mountain District. Rangers determined that the burglar
was probably a local and working alone. Surveillance operations were begun,
and, on January 8th, rangers observed J.P., 42, of Tucson, dumping
stolen property at a trailhead that he'd taken in an auto burglary in the
adjacent county park. Following a short pursuit, he was arrested and booked
into federal prison on felony charges of possession of stolen property. J.P.
is believed to have committed 28 car clouts in the district and another 50 in
the county park. He told rangers that he was hoping that the arresting ranger
would shoot him while fleeing the scene. J.P. has a history of auto
burglaries, including a felony conviction in Texas. The county attorney's
office has also filed felony charges against him. [Paula Rooney, CR, SAGU,

95-31 - Biscayne (Florida) - Possible Homicide

The body of a middle-aged man was found by park visitors in the ocean in the
Stiltsville section of the park on the morning of January 19th. Homicide
detectives from Metro Dade are heading the investigation, with assistance by
rangers and Florida Marine Patrol officers. Stiltsville is an area in the bay
where the state issued leases to the sea bottom and lease holders constructed
homes on pilings prior to the establishment of the park. [CRO, BISC, 1/20]

95-32 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Theft Arrest

On January 21st, rangers arrested T.G., 18, a Great Onyx Job Corps, for
attempted theft of a government vehicle and malicious mischief. T.G. had
broken the window of a government van and attempted to steal it to drive to his
home in Georgia. Although T.G. was able to break the steering column housing
and start the van, he was unable to disable is steering wheel lock, so drove
the vehicle only a short distance before abandoning it and walking back tot he
center. Rangers were able to identify T.G. by the distinctive footprints he
left at the scene, and he subsequently confessed to the crime. [CRO, MACA,
