INCIDENTS
94-697 - Yosemite (California) - MVA with Fatal and Multiple Injuries
On the afternoon of December 29th, a Dodge mini van collided with a park snow
plow on the Badger Pass Road. All eight passengers in the van, an extended
family from California and Connecticut, suffered varying degrees of injury and
required medical treatment. Two were flown from the scene by helicopter to a
hospital in Modesto; one of them, a 70-year-old male, had suffered massive
chest trauma and was pronounced dead upon arrival. Six ambulances, two
helicopters, and two structural engines and their crews were required to manage
the patient extrication and transport. Over 40 park personnel were involved.
The roads were covered with packed snow at the time of the accident, but the
weather was clear and both vehicles were equipped with tire chains. The
accident occurred shortly before the lifts closed at the Badger Pass ski area
and completely blocked access to the area. Over 900 cars were trapped at
Badger Pass for several hours. Investigation into the cause of the accident
continues. [Brian Smith, YOSE, 2/14 - Editor's Note: Yosemite is catching up
on incident reports. This is the first of several from the past month or so
that will appear in the Morning Report over the next few days]
95-62 - Shenandoah (Virginia) - Poaching Arrest
On February 7th, G.M. of Grottoes, Virginia, was charged on two counts
of illegal hunting in the park, shooting in the park, possession of a weapon in
the park, and destruction of natural resources, all of which stemmed from an
investigation which involved state and local law enforcement agencies and
included surveillance operations and the gathering of significant intelligence
information. This was his second arrest for illegal activities in Shenandoah
in recent months; last fall, G.M. was charged with hunting and shooting from
a vehicle on a park road. This is believed to be the first investigation in
the park which has lead to the same person being apprehended twice within a
year for separate hunting violations. The recent establishment of four
criminal investigator positions in the park has lead to the creation of the
intelligence base needed to pursue complex resource cases such as this one.
Criminal investigator Skip Wissinger headed the investigation. [Greg Stiles,
Leader, R&VPS, SHEN, 2/14]
95-63 - Hot Springs (Arkansas) - Drug Conviction
Last September, rangers Ron Harkins and Tim Fincham stopped a vehicle driven by
R.P. of Benton, Arkansas, on suspicion of driving while impaired, and
cited her for driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a drug
screen. During the search incident to the arrest, rangers found five bags of
methamphetamine and about 60 grams of nicotinamide. She was subsequently
charged with possession of controlled substances. R.P. was found guilty,
and, on February 7th, was sentenced to three years' probation, with
participation in a substance abuse program and testing, and 40 hours of
community service; fined $2,500; ordered to submit her person, residence,
office and vehicle to reasonable searches; required to warn others with her
that of this condition; and ordered to forfeit her 1992 Eagle Talon sports car
(valued at $10,000) to the government. [CR, HOSP, 2/15]
95-64 - Ozark (Missouri) - Arson
A six-acre wildland fire occurred in the Lower Current District on February
11th. One park residence, currently unoccupied, was saved. The fire is
believed to have been caused by arson. [Tim Blank, CR, OZAR, 2/13]
