INCIDENTS
95-91 - Golden Gate (California) - Arrest of Wanted Felon
On March 6th, Park Police officer Robert Jansing stopped S.R., 49, in
Gas House Cove in lower Fort Mason for a routine traffic violation. S.R. was
subsequently identified as wanted for an armed robbery in Yorba Linda in which
a man had been killed and for his involvement in two other shootings in
southern California, one involving a police officer and the other an unarmed
security guard. S.R., an ex-Los Angeles County deputy, was recently featured
on "America's Most Wanted" and had elsewhere boasted that he wouldn't be taken
alive. At the time of his arrest, S.R. was in possession of several loaded
semi-automatic weapons, a laser scope, ammunition, bullet-proof Kevlar
materials, a grenade launcher with grenades, and many other similar items. He
was taken to the city jail, where he is being held without bail. [Sgt. J.O.
Smith, SFFO/USPP, 3/7]
95-92 - Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Resource Theft Arrest
On February 25th, rangers arrested J.S.K. of El Rancho, New Mexico, for
the theft of 87 pounds of petrified wood from the Rainbow Forest area of the
park. When rangers came upon him, J.S.K. was stopped in the road, blocking the
south lane of traffic. Four people were standing outside the vehicle. The lid
to the trunk of his vehicle was open, and the rangers could see several large
pieces of wood in plain view. J.S.K. was arrested and taken to the county jail,
where he was later released on his own recognizance. It's estimated that over
twelve tons of petrified wood are removed from the park each year. [PEFO, 3/6]
