INCIDENTS

95-177 - Guadalupe Mountains (Texas) - Search and Rescue

Rangers received a report of a missing 14-year-old boy on the evening of April
21st. The boy had been hiking with a school group from El Paso; although his
companions eventually turned around and headed back to the visitor center, he
decided to continue hiking into the high country. He had neither water nor a
light nor a jacket. Temperatures in the 30s and high winds were forecast. A
hasty search was begun and the boy was found at 3:30 a.m. at an elevation of
8,000 feet. He was suffering from hypothermia, but recovered. Altogether,
he'd walked about 16 miles. [CR, GUMO, 4/24]

95-178 - Blue Ridge (North Carolina/Virginia) - MVA with Fatality

On April 20th, a single-car accident occurred at milepost 223 in which the
operator was severely injured and the passenger was killed after being ejected
through the vehicle's sun roof opening. Evidence revealed that the vehicle was
traveling at a speed in excess of 100 mph when the driver lost control and hit
a tree. Alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor. The driver
remains in critical condition. [CRO, BLRI, 4/25]

95-179 - Lava Beds (California) - EMS Response

On April 21st, rangers were summoned to the Forest Service's Doorknob Snow Park
for a medical emergency. Employees there reported that B.D. had been
working in the generator room of his cabin at Little Medicine Lake when he
apparently was overcome by carbon monoxide. Information supplied to the
rangers and ambulance service indicated that B.D. was in serious distress.
Ranger Terry Harris responded by snowmobile, verified that B.D. was suffering
from carbon monoxide poisoning, and provided oxygen and other medical
assistance until a paramedic arrived on scene. B.D. was transported nine miles
by snowmobile to a waiting ambulance. He is in fair to good condition at a
hospital in Klamath Falls. [CRO, LABE, 4/25]

95-180 - Yosemite (California) - Agency Assist; Arrests

On April 15th, dispatch received a request from the California Highway Patrol
for assistance in apprehending two suspects in a stolen vehicle which was
believed to be heading toward the park. Rangers responded and located the
vehicle five miles west of the park entrance. It had crashed and overturned
and was a total loss. The two occupants, both 17-year-olds from Sonora,
California, were found about a mile away and were taken into custody. Both had
previous arrest records. [Dave Lattimore, DR, Mather District, YOSE, 4/21]

95-181 - Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (Maryland/D.C.) - Car Clout Convictions

On April 21st, D.L., 32, of Hagerstown, Maryland, pled guilty to
charges of trespassing in a motor vehicle, destruction of property, and
possession of stolen material in magistrate's court and was sentenced to 18
months in prison. The charges stemmed from a vehicle break-in at McMahon's
Mill last October 8th in which rangers set up a bait vehicle in response to
several car clouts at that location. D.S., 21, also of Hagerstown,
pled guilty to possession of stolen property last fall; he was fined $1,000 and
sentenced to two years' supervised probation. D.S., who lived with
D.L., committed suicide a month later. [Kevin Fitzgerald, CR, CHOH, 4/24]
