INCIDENTS

95-30 - Saguaro (Arizona) - Follow-up on Car Clouting Arrest

On May 3rd, J.P., 42, of Tucson, pled guilty to felony possession of
stolen property in federal district court and was sentenced to seven months in
prison, six months in a half-way house, 36 months supervised probation,
mandatory therapy, restitution to his victims, and banned from all NPS areas.
J.P. was arrested by rangers in January and connected with over 30 car clouts
in the park's Tucson Mountain District and another 50 or more in the adjoining
county park over the last year. For the past five months, J.P.'s movements
have been monitored through an electronic ankle bracelet in order to stem his
"passion" for breaking into vehicles. The county attorney's office has also
filed felony theft charges for the offenses that occurred in the state park.
[Robert E. Stinson, DR, SAGU, 5/8]

95-211 - Joshua Tree (California) - Serious Employee Injury

Park employee G.H., 24, who is seven months pregnant, was sitting on a
low wall outside the park's visitor center on the afternoon of May 9th when
visitor R.S.-L., 65, a Swiss national, attempted to park in a
space directly in front of G.H.. R.S.-L. accelerated her rental vehicle
as she pulled in; the car jumped the curb and struck G.H.'s legs. G.H. was
taken by helicopter to Palm Springs, where she was treated for fractures and
lacerations. She was admitted to the hospital so that an ultrasound could be
conducted. At last report, G.H. was in stable condition. No complications
to the pregnancy are expected. [Judy Bartzatt, JOTR, 5/10]

95-212 - Cumberland Gap (Kentucky/Tennessee) - Burglary

The park's administrative officer returned home on the evening of May 5th to
find that her residence had been burglarized. The thief or thieves took over
$700 in old coins, specially minted coins, old bills, savings bonds, insurance
policies, birth certificates and an electronic game. No other personal or
household items were taken. A maintenance employee who lives on the other side
of the duplex was home at the time, but didn't hear or see anything unusual.
The investigation continues; a suspect has been identified. [Elizabeth Dinger,
CUGA, 5/10]

95-213 - Independence (Philadelphia) - Special Event

The park was the site of the tenth annual AfricAmerican Festival last weekend.
The event began with a parade of about 3,500 people past Independence Hall, and
included live entertainment, food and the sale of Afrocentric items.
Attendance for both days has been estimated at 12,000 people. No major law
enforcement or EMS incidents occurred. [Ann Marie DiSerafino, INDE, 5/10]

95-214 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Rescue

G.F., 39, of Las Vegas fell about 20 feet while scrambling over large
boulders in Gold Strike Canyon on the morning of May 3rd. A companion reported
the incident to boaters o the river below Hoover Dam. Park and Las Vegas
police SAR teams responded and evacuated G.F. by ground, boat and air to a
hospital in Las Vegas, where he's listed in serious but stable condition. [Bob
Belden, LAME, 5/4]

95-215 - Joshua Tree (California) - Search and Rescue

Around 8:30 p.m. on May 5th, rangers were advised that five-year-old K.L.
had walked away from Black Rock Canyon campground. A search was
conducted of the immediate area, but proved fruitless. Interagency teams were
placed on the Hi-View nature trail, where the child's tracks were found, and
searchers found him on the trail at 11:30 p.m. He was cold but otherwise okay.
High winds and low temperatures contributed to the critical nature of the
search. [CRO, JOTR, 5/10]
