INCIDENTS
95-404 - Mesa Verde (Colorado) - Rescue
A school group from Vidor, Texas, was having lunch in the picnic area on Chapin
Mesa on July 10th when two instructors decided to play a joke on the group by
pretending to push H.M., 48, into Spruce Canyon. H.M. jumped onto a
ledge, lost his balance, then fell 35 feet into the canyon. H.M. suffered a
fractured left hip, humerus and shoulder, a dislocated right shoulder, and
closed head injuries. He was carried from the canyon, driven by park ambulance
to Far View, then transported by helicopter to a hospital in Farmington, New
Mexico. He is in intensive care but in stable condition. [Denise Fuller,
Dispatch, MEVE]
95-405 - Yosemite (California) - MVA; Search
On the afternoon of July 4th, J.B., 35, was riding his motorcycle on
Highway 140 when he went off the road, struck a large rock, and was thrown into
a side channel of the Merced River. Witnesses saw him float down the channel
to its confluence with the main channel of the river, where he was quickly
swept downstream. He was face down in the river and was not moving. The river
is running at an extremely high flow rate due to runoff from a near record snow
pack. A ground and air search was begun of the river and continued the
following day. They found no sign of J.B.. The search has accordingly been
suspended until river conditions improve later this summer. [CR, YOSE]
95-406 - Jefferson National Expansion (Missouri) - Special Event
The 15th Annual Fair St. Louis, formerly the Veiled Prophet Fair, was held on
and adjacent to the park over the July 4th weekend. The fair drew well over a
half million people; among the features wee two daily air shows, an evening
fireworks extravaganza, and free entertainment by The Foreigners, Tanya Tucker,
Gladys Knight, Ringo Star, All 4 One, and Tom Jones. Because of cooler weather
this year, there was an 80% drop in emergency medical cases from last year.
Three Midwest Field Area special event teams assisted at the event. There were
fewer arrests and citations during the fair than at any previous event; all
were for minor offenses. One city police officer was injured just off park
property while trying to break up a small, rowdy group. [Deryl Stone, CR,
JEFF]
95-407 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - MVA with Fatality
K.M., 34, was killed in a one-vehicle rollover just north of Bullfrog
airstrip at 11:30 p.m. on July 7th. K.M. had attended a party at Bullfrog
and was returning to his lodging when the accident occurred. He had passed
several other vehicles at a high rate of speed when his truck left the roadway
and rolled several times over a distance of about 400 feet. Alcohol is
suspected as a contributing factor. [Tomie Lee, CR, GLCA]

OBSERVATIONS
Thanks to Dick Sellars in SWRO for today's quote:
"I have always thought of our Service as an institution, more than any other
bureau, engaged in a field essentially of morality - the aim of man to rise
above himself, and to choose the option of quality rather than material
superfluity."
Freeman Tilden to George B.
Hartzog, Jr., ca. 1971
