INCIDENTS

95-634 - Colonial (Virginia) - Special Event

Park staff are participating in a major radiological emergency exercise at the
Navy's Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and Cheatham Annex, both of which adjoin
the park. The exercise will run through September 27th. Exercise activities
are not having any impacts on normal visitor use. Rangers are providing
additional security along the parkway due to the military's concerns about
possible demonstrators. Other state and local enforcement agencies are also on
hand to assist if necessary. [Jim Burnett, CR, COLO]

95-635 - Haleakala (Hawaii) - Rescue

On the afternoon of September 18th, a 28-year-old visitor to the Kipahulu
District was crossing a river above a small waterfall when he slipped on the
rocks, fell about 15 feet, and landed in the water on a submerged ledge.
Although the water buffered his fall, it also added to his distress, as he was
unable to swim. He was immobilized on a Miller extrication board (a buoyant
splint/litter), evacuated to an ambulance, and taken to a local hospital for
evaluation and treatment. [Karen Ardoin, CR, HALE]

95-636 - Yosemite (California) - MVA with Multiple Injuries

On the evening of September 10th, the driver of a 4 x 4 pickup was heading
southbound on Highway 41 at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles over the
double yellow line and around curves. As the truck entered a curve near the
Wawona campground, it slammed head on into an oncoming Audi occupied by two
German visitors. The impact was such that the cab of the pickup was nearly
torn loose from its frame. The front of the Audi was pushed back into the
passenger compartment, trapping the driver's legs. All occupants were wearing
seatbelts. The driver of the Audi suffered a fractured femur; the other
victims suffered relatively minor injuries. Several units from the park and a
unit from Sierra ambulance responded and provided extrication, medical care,
and accident investigation. All victims were transported to Fresno - one by
helicopter and two by ambulance. The investigation is continuing, but neither
alcohol nor drugs not appear to have been contributing factors. The driver
will probably be charged with reckless driving. [CRO, YOSE]

95-637 - Buffalo (Arkansas) - MVA with Fatality

F.C., 85, of Chester, Illinois, was killed and three others were injured
in a two vehicle accident on Paradise Hill south of Pruitt ranger station on
September 15th. The driver, O.Z., lost control of her vehicle on the wet
and slippery roadway and slid under the rear wheels of a tractor-trailer. The
accident was investigated by state police. [CR, BUFF]

OBSERVATIONS

Today's entry is another from the National Park Service's "Conservation Quotes"
(1953):

"For a nation that grows more metropolitan and industrialized every year, the
experience of solitude, even the simple fact of quiet, has become
inestimable...It is imperative to maintain portions of the wilderness
untouched, so that a tree will rot where it falls, a waterfall will pour its
curve without generating electricity, a trumpeter swan may float on
uncontaminated water - and moderns may at least see what their ancestors knew
in their nerves and blood."
