INCIDENTS

95-653 - Great Smokies (North Carolina/Tennessee) - Follow-up on Hurricane Opal

The segment of the Appalachian Trail which passes through the park has been
reopened. Trail crews from Great Smokies, Yosemite and Rocky Mountain worked
for two weeks to remove over 1,000 trees from the trail, which was completely
impassable. Hundreds more trees were removed from other trails, many with the
assistance of volunteers. The park extends its thanks to all for their help in
reopening the trails. [Jason Houck, CR, GRSM]

95-730 - Gulf Islands (Mississippi/Florida) - Accidental Shooting of Employee

Just before noon on Wednesday, November 8th, park laborer J.B. found a
six-shot, .22 caliber "Saturday night special" in the Davis Bayou area of the
Mississippi District. J.B. accidentally shot himself in the index finger of
his right hand while handling the weapon. J.B. was taken to a hospital,
where he was treated and released. The condition of the weapons indicates that
it had been in the elements for a period of time. The investigation is
continuing. [Gene Phillips, CR, GUIS]

95-731 - Chickasaw (Oklahoma) - Drug Arrest

Ranger Don Reed arrested R.F., 39, of Hennepin, Oklahoma, for
possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia on November 4th. During a
consent search of R.F.'s pickup, Reed found a blue plastic stick deodorant
case with the label removed. The contents of the case had been extracted to
create a small compartment for four quarter-gram bags of methamphetamine. Also
in the case was a bent spoon and syringe. [CRO, CHIC]

OBSERVATIONS

The following quote is excerpted from the 1966 edition of "Conservation
Quotes", issued by the Department of Interior:

"The hour is late, the opportunities diminish with each passing year, and we
must establish here a Common Market of conservation knowledge which will enable
us to achieve our highest goals and broadest purposes. With each day that
passes, the natural world shrinks as we exert greater artificial control over
our environment."

                                              the Interior
