                           *** NOTICE ***

The following notice has just been issued by the Director:

"We have been told by OMB and the Secretary's office to begin the orderly
shutdown of the National Park Service. Non-essential employees in WASO have
been asked to leave by noon today. All other non-essential employees are to be
dismissed as close to noon Eastern Standard Time as possible, but no later than
three hours after their normal, local reporting time and only in order to
complete orderly shutdown of facilities.

"This begins Phase I of the shutdown. We have NOT started asking people to
leave campgrounds or hotels. We hope that an agreement can be reached today to
avoid asking people to leave the facilities operated by concessioners. We are
closing the sites on the National Mall.

"Please consult your supervisor for details of your unit's shutdown plan."
