A.G., 35, a personnel assistant in the Southwest SSO, died of
injuries sustained in a car accident in Santa Fe on the evening of November
16th. A.G., her daughter L., 13, and her son H., 11, were
passengers in a car being driver by her mother R.R., a retired NPS
employee. The vehicle was struck broadside in the accident; A.G. was
killed, but her mother and children received only minor injuries. A.G. is
survived by her husband, J., and by her children. A funeral service will be
held this morning at Calvary Chapel in Santa Fe. Memorial contributions may be
directed to the Kidney Foundation, 1715 Grand NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.

[Public Affairs, SWSSO]
95-740 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Accidental Shooting
On November 10th, rangers responded to the Desert View entrance station to
assist the victim of a hunting accident. A.G., 44, of Tuba City,
Arizona, was shot in the head while hunting outside the park. He was rushed by
ambulance to a nearby helispot; park paramedics arrived shortly thereafter by
helicopter and provided advanced life support to A.G., who remained
conscious, breathing and alert. He was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center,
where he is in stable condition. A high-powered 7 mm rifle round removed a
portion of his skull, exposing the brain and causing intercerebral bleeding and
a concussion. Investigation revealed that both men were highly intoxicated at
the time of the incident. Criminal charges are pending against A.G.'s
companion. [Charlie Peterson, DR, South District, GRCA]
95-741 - Death Valley (California) - MVA with Two Fatalities
On November 15th, a rental car went off the Badwater Road, rolled several
times, and ejected the two occupants - both Italian nationals. The car then
caught fire and burned. One of the visitors died instantly; the other was
found alive by a passerby, but died five minutes later. Park and state highway
patrol units arrived about 45 minutes after the accident occurred. The
identification of the two occupants has not been confirmed, as neither carried
any identification and the fire consumed the contents of the vehicle. [Mark
Maciha, DR, South District, DEVA]
95-742 - Joshua Tree (California) - Rescue
W.D., 13, of Beaumont, California, was scrambling on AFPA rock without
safety equipment on November 10th when he free fell about eight feet, tumbled
another 20 feet, and ended up on a ledge with a possible fractured left ankle
and other abrasions. Rangers treated his injuries, then performed a 50-foot
belayed scree evacuation and carried him to a waiting ambulance. [Judy
Bartzatt, CR, JOTR]
95-743 - Joshua Tree (California) - Rescue
A local ham operator contacted park dispatch in the early hours of November
11th to advise that he'd received a report of an injured individual on Boy
Scout trail near Keys Peek. Rangers found that J.M., 13, had been rock
scrambling the previous evening and had slipped and slid down the rock face,
landing on his left shin. He was evacuated and taken to a local hospital.
