INCIDENTS
96-184 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - Follow-up on Probable Drownings
The body of a female child believed to be that of six-year-old Stephanie
Strom was found by a park visitor fishing off-shore near the launch ramp at
Hite on May 10th. On May 11th, rangers conducting grid searches of the
surrounding lake waters a mile southwest of the Colorado River bridge found
the body of an adult male believed to be her father, D.. The pair had
been missing since the accident on May 2nd in which both were presumed to
have drowned. Park investigators and the county medical examination were
called in for verification and identification of bodies. [David Sandbakken,
LES, GLCA]
96-204 - U.S.S. Arizona (Hawaii) - Follow-up on Oil Spill
The park remained closed yesterday, as oil recovery efforts following
Tuesday's spill continue. Although the oil continues to spread, indications
are that booms which have been deployed in the harbor have kept most of the
oil from the vicinity of the Arizona and the adjacent memorial. A boom is
also protecting the wreck of the Utah. The heaviest concentration of oil in
the vicinity of the park is in Halawa Stream and the shoreline adjacent to
the Arizona's shoreside visitor center. An incident command team under a
Coast Guard captain has been set up; the team's priorities are to:
o Contain the spill at the Waiau power plant.
o Clean Halawa Stream and the Arizona visitor center shoreline.
o Clean the park and Ford Island shoreline.
o Clean the naval base area.
o Clean Waipio Point.
o Clean Iroquois Point.
The oil which was spilled is not toxic, but does contain benzoid. The fumes
are unpleasant and can make people nauseous, but are not dangerous.
Mechanical cleaning of the shoreline will be necessary due to the type of
oil. The cleanup of the spill around the Arizona visitor center should be
completed by today, and boat shuttles to the Arizona should resume. [Jim
Adams, USAR; Kevin Tennyson, Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance,

96-207 - Kaloko-Honokohau (Hawaii) - Serious Employee Illness
Francis Kuailani, superintendent of Kaloko-Honokohau, suffered a heart attack
early on the morning of May 15th and has been hospitalized at the Straub
Hospital in Honolulu. No details regarding the severity of the attack or his
condition were available at the time of the report yesterday afternoon.
Inquiries concerning him should be directed to Bryan Harry, superintendent of
Pacific Island SSO. [Jerry Case, CR, KAHO]
96-208 - Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Stolen Vehicle Recovery
On the afternoon of May 13th, ranger Pappas stopped a 1989 Toyota hatchback
in the Painted Desert visitor center parking lot to advise the driver, J.D.S.,
20, that he had a broken tail light. A routine check of the
plate revealed that the car had been stolen in California. J.D.S. was
arrested for vehicle theft and turned over to the state for transport and
prosecution. During the contact, J.D.S. told Pappas that he was an escapee
from a county jail in California. [Pat Quinn, CR, PEFO]

OBSERVATIONS
"Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land. By land is meant
all of the things on, over, or in the earth. Harmony with land is like
harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his
left.... The land is one organism. Its parts, like our own parts, compete
with each other and cooperate with each other."
Aldo Leopold, from "Quotes:
Conservation, Parks, Natural
Beauty," compiled by Elizabeth H.
Coiner, Department of Interior,
1966
