INCIDENTS
96-440 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Storm Impacts
A wind storm which struck the park on August 5th knocked down almost 600
trees along roads and in frontcountry areas and caused 16 motor vehicle
accidents, 13 other property damage incidents, four personal injuries and an
estimated $54,000 in property damage. The fire lookout at Mt. Washburn
reported gusts in excess of 90 mph. It's expected that the storm probably
knocked down thousands of other trees along the park's 1,200 miles of
backcountry trails. [Mike Murray, ACR, YELL]
96-441 - North Cascades (Washington) - Rescue
On July 30th, rangers evacuated Seattle climber R.B., who suffered a
leg injury on his descent from a climb of the Fisher Chimneys route on Mt.
Shuksan. R.B. had fallen into a rock and snow moat below the Chimneys.
Although he initially lost consciousness, he was able to later crawl back to
the route. Other climbing parties assisted him to a landing zone and alerted
his climbing partner, who was ahead of R.B. R.B. was medevaced by
helicopter from the area. [Pete Cowan, CR, NOCA]
96-442 - Badlands (South Dakota) - Suicide
Park dispatch received a report of a man slumped over in a vehicle with a
revolver in his hand late on the morning of August 1st. Rangers found the
body of a 23-year-old man, a five-page suicide note, and a .357 revolver with
a single round casing. The county is handling the death investigation with
the assistance of rangers. [Scott Lopez, CR, BADL]
96-443 - Gateway (New York) - Narcotics/Fugitive Arrest
On the afternoon of July 14th, lifeguards at Jacob Riis Park advised Park
Police officers Sal Norman and Jose Rodriguez that a man had been seen using
narcotics on the beach. They searched the man, identified as 51-year-old
T.M., and discovered a large quantity of individually packaged
amounts of cocaine and several crack pipes in his possession. The officers
also found that T.M. was wanted by Suffolk County police for aggravated
harassment and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was
arrested for possession with intent to sell. T.M. is well known to the
district attorney's office. At the time of his arrest, T.M. was under
indictment for numerous drug charges, felony assault, and child molestation
related to child pornography. He is being held on $500,000 bail and could
receive up to 15 years in prison for all of his pending charges. [Lt.
Michael Fellner, USPP, GATE]

OPERATIONAL NOTES
Wilderness Management - NPS managers and superintendents participated in two
sessions of a very successful interagency wilderness management training
course this summer - the first in Missoula, Montana, and the second in
Trapper's Lake, Colorado. This training is important because the Service
oversees more than 40% of the national wilderness preservation system. Also
attending were representatives from the Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife
Service, BLM and Air Force. A third session will be held at Eagle Lake in
California in September. Although it is full, a waiting list is being kept
in case of openings. If you're interested, contact Uwe Nehring at MORA (on
cc:Mail by name) or Greg Kroll at the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness
Training Center (406-626-5208) for further information. [Wes Henry,
Wilderness Program Manager, RAD/WASO]
