INCIDENTS
97-155 - Effigy Mounds NM (Iowa) - Flooding
Local flooding of the Mississippi River has closed Highway 76 about a mile
north of the park. Traffic has been re-routed onto a county gravel road
along the park's western boundary. A sign will be installed at the southern
end of Highway 76, noting that the road to Effigy Mounds is still open. A
noticeable decrease in visitation has occurred. [EFMO, 4/15]
97-156 - Lake Roosevelt NRA (Washington) - Special Event
On April 10th, park employees participated in a celebration of National DARE
Day. Over a thousand elementary school students, teachers, and many parents
walked across the Grand Coulee Dam. The walkers were accompanied by over 50
law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel from approximately
30 federal, state, county, tribal, and local agencies. Following the walk,
students were treated to lunch in the park, sang songs, and listened to short
motivational talks by selected speakers. The event was topped off by the
landing of a National Guard helicopter and a talk by the pilot. The event
was run under ICS with Steve Clark as IC. [Acting CR, LARO, 4/14]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Kalaupapa NHP (Hawaii) - Monk Seals
On the morning of April 14th, park staff discovered a monk seal with a
newborn pup on one of the park's white sand beaches. Monk seals are a
critically endangered species, with only 1,200 estimated worldwide. Only two
pups were recorded in the state of Hawaii last year. Park wildlife biologist
Rick Potts has assessed the condition of the pup and determined that it is by
all indications strong and healthy. The community of Kalaupapa has taken
great pride in this birth and is assisting the park in protecting the beach
area where the monk seal and her pup are located. This is the first recorded
monk seal birth for the park and the only such birth known to have occurred
in the Hawaiian Islands this year. [Eric Beckert, PR, KALA, 4/15]
