Day/Date: Wednesday, June 4, 1997
Broadcast: By 1000 ET

dissemination of Morning Reports on Monday and Tuesday (and, apparently, for
much of the previous week for parks in the Southwest). Those problems have
been remedied.
INCIDENTS
97-218 - Badlands NP (SD)- Follow-up on Employee Murders
T.U. of Scenic, South Dakota, the man who shot and killed ranger
Darrin Harvey and park secretary Wiebke Marks, died of a self-inflicted
gunshot wound in a Rapid City hospital on May 29th. A memorial for the two
employees will be held in the park tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Two native
cottonwood trees will be planted in their honor. The trees will provide
canopy between the Ben Reifel visitor center and the Cedar Pass ranger
station. Park neighbors have been invited to attend. [Marianne Mills, BADL,
6/3]
97-244 - Yosemite NP (CA) - Rescue
On the evening of June 2nd, park dispatch received a report of a girl trapped
under a boulder at the base of the cliff near the Le Conte Memorial.
Investigator Scott Hinson and ranger Tom Wilson were first to reach the
injured 13-year-old, who was lying on her back with a boulder weighing about
five tons lying on top of her. The girl and other students were climbing in
cliff talus when the rock rolled on top of her. A two-and-a-half hour
extrication effort followed. Employees from the two park engine companies
and rescue staff employed the "Jaws of Life", air bags and other heavy rescue
equipment to free the girl. Advanced life support was initiated after she
was extracted. She was then taken to a hospital in Modesto, where she is
being treated for significant pelvic, internal, and leg injuries. [Brian
Smith, SPR, YOSE, 6/3]
97-245 - Isle Royale NP (MI) - Search
On May 31st, eleven members of the A.D. party were camped at
Chippewa Harbor on Lake Superior. Three adults and eight children in the
party portaged their canoe three miles to Lake Ritchie in the interior of the
park. After a day of fishing, the members of the group began preparing for
the hike back to Chippewa. Without the knowledge of the adults, four younger
boys struck off alone for the camp at about 6:30 p.m. One of them, J.D.,
10, stopped to tie his shoe while the other boys continued on.
J.D. then strayed from the trail and became lost n the thick forest. A
boater camped at Chippewa reported the incident to park authorities via radio
at 11 p.m. Five hasty teams were deployed during the night; they covered
over 25 miles of trail, but failed to find him. As the second day's search
was beginning around 9:30 the following morning, J.D. walked into his camp
at Chippewa. He had spent over three hours wandering around in the bush that
morning before he stumbled onto the trail. He was scared but uninjured. He
and the other children received a "Hug-a-Tree" lecture from incident
searchers. [Peter Armington, CR, ISRO, 6/3]

OPERATIONAL NOTES
Ammunition Problems - The NPS armorer at FLETC has received several Sig 229s
with the extractors damaged or missing as a result of firing ammunition with
weak cases. In all cases, this has been Federal 40 caliber ammunition
manufactured during or prior to 1994. If the 40 caliber ammunition you are
carrying is from a lot that has a "3" or and "H" as the seventh digit in the
lot number, it was manufactured during or prior to 1994 and should not be
carried. In order to exchange these rounds for current ammunition, please
contact Gary Gronfor at Federal's product service department at 800-322-2342.
Questions about ammunition should be directed to Joe Johnson at FLETC, whose
cc:Mail address is NP-WASO. [Joe Johnson, NPS, FLETC]
