INCIDENTS
97-278 - National Capital Parks East (DC) - Pursuit; Assault on Officer
On the evening of Tuesday, June 17th, USPP officer Michael Wallace stopped a
vehicle in southeast Washington for a minor traffic violation. A computer
check indicated that the vehicle was stolen. As Wallace approached the
vehicle, the driver sped off and a pursuit ensued. The stolen vehicle rammed
two USPP vehicles at an intersection, then struck a parked car and flipped on
its side. The operator attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. He
was charged with assault on a police officer. Three Park Police officers
sustained minor injuries when their vehicles were rammed. [Bill Lynch, RLES,

OPERATIONAL NOTES
Hauntavirus - In 1993, one of the park's two residences was found to be
infested with hauntavirus-carrying mice. The only case of hauntavirus in the
NPS occurred in an employee who resided in this house. Over 900 mice were
trapped in the building over a three-month period. The house was immediately
abandoned and isolated. Funds were made available to tear down the building
in 1994, but all bids were well over the amount available. Additional funds
made demolition possible this year. The 2,000-square-foot house was
demolished and buried this week. The contractor was required to wear medical
hazard isolation gear and to periodically spray the house and area with
clorox water, both for dust abatement and to kill the virus. Contract
specifications were developed with assistance from the solicitor's office,
the Public Health Service, the Center for Disease Control, and NPS offices.
