INCIDENTS
97-581 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Follow-up on Search
On September 15, 1997, a major inter-agency search was begun for 45-year-old
D.R. of California, whose vehicle was found parked at a remote
trailhead. Investigation by rangers revealed that D.R. was a loner with a
history of pushing himself to his physical limits in desert hikes. The
search effort continued for a full week, but no sign of him was found. On
January 7th, a hiker reported that he had found a human skull in the park.
Rangers and a representative from the Pima County Sheriff's Office
investigated and found additional skeletal remains and articles of clothing.
The cause of death was determined to have been environmental exposure.
[Aniceto Olais, CR, ORPI, 1/25]
98-34 - Death Valley NP (CA) - Fatality
On January 12th, a backpacker found a pack in the Mesquite Flat area which
contained a birth certificate, a letter, and credit card receipts from
January, 1997. He removed the information from the pack and contacted the
park. On January 14th, ranger Ron Rods located the pack and found the
partial skeletal remains of a single person nearby. The county coroner has
tentatively identified the remains using the identification in the pack. The
probable victim was very much a loner according to his daughter. She told
rangers that it wasn't unusual to not hear from him for years at a time. The
case has been turned over to the Inyo County Sheriff's Office for
investigation. [Scot McElveen, ACR, DEVA, 1/23]

OPERATIONAL NOTES
Correction - Readers are indeed alert, as we have today the third correction
in as many Morning Reports. We promise that this is not a trend. In any
case, a couple of folks noted that the attribution on the observation which
appeared in the January 21st Morning Report was likely in error. Russ
Wilson, who sent in the original quote, checked with the University of
Pennsylvania, and found that David Janson is actually Daniel Janzen, a
professor of biology at that school. [Editor]

TRAINING AND WORKSHOP CALENDAR
Two calendars alternate in the Morning Report on Mondays - this one, which
contains training courses and workshops, and a second, which contains
meetings, conferences and events. If you know of a conference, meeting,
workshop or training session with Servicewide interest and implications,
please send the information along. Entries are listed no earlier than FOUR
months before the event, EXCEPT in instances in which registration dates
close much earlier. Asterisks indicate new entries; brackets at end of entry
indicate source of information. Brevity is appreciated.
