INCIDENTS
98-129 - Capitol Reef NP (UT) - Earthquake
Park residents and campers awoke to the shaking and rumbling of an earthquake
just after 5 a.m. on March 29th. According to USGS, the quake registered 3.0
on the Richter scale and the epicenter was about two miles from park
headquarters and the park housing area. No damage to park facilities has
been discovered. [Tom Cox, CR, CARE, 4/3]
98-130 - Capitol Reef NP (UT) - Rescue
On March 17th, backpacker J.V. of Missoula, Montana, slipped while
traversing slickrock around a water-filled pothole and fell into the water,
breaking her ankle. Her companions spent the night with her in the remote
canyon where the accident occurred, then left her alone and hiked out for
help. When rangers reached J.V., they found her shocky and hypothermic.
Problems with the park radio system cut the rescue team off from park
dispatch for over six hours, resulting in logistical problems and preventing
the use of a helicopter for evacuation. The two-and-a-half hour carryout
from the rugged canyon took place after dark with help from employees from
the interpretation and maintenance (roads and trails) divisions. Transport
to a clinic required an additional three-hour drive. Ranger Bob Kreiling was
IC. [Tom Cox, CR, CARE, 4/3]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Glacier NP (MT) - Wolf Sightings
On Friday, March 27th, rangers Julia Kuncl and Dallas Koehn discovered the
carcass of an adult cow elk in the Windy Creek area of the Many Glacier
Valley on the east side of the park. Investigation of the carcass revealed
that the elk had been killed by a wolf or wolves. While Kuncl and Koehn were
investigating the area around the carcass, they saw a pair of adult wolves
across nearby Sherburne Lake. This is the most recent sighting of wolves in
the Many Glacier Valley and the first sighting this year of two wolves
travelling together in that area. Wolf sightings along the east front have
been rare following the removal of three of the four wolves that comprised a
pack which had denned in or near the northeast corner of the park (an action
taken by a rancher in southeastern Alberta). This recent sighting, combined
with past wolf observations in the Many Glacier Valley and along the east
front of the continental divide, raises the distinct possibility that a
reproducing wolf pack either exists or is forming along the east front,
possibly in or near Many Glacier Valley. Rangers and biologists will
continue to monitor that valley and the east front from the Canadian border
south for additional wolf activity that would support the possibility that a
reproducing wolf pack exists in the park. [Steve Frye, CR, Glacier, 4/2]
