INCIDENTS
98-144 - Southeast Region (TN) - Tornado
Southeast Region's superintendents' conference ended a day early after a
tornado roared through downtown Nashville on the afternoon of Thursday, April
16th. The tornado passed very closely to the Union Station Hotel, where the
group had just concluded its afternoon session. Several attendees were
heading to Ryman Auditorium, original home of the Grand Ole Opry, for a
guided tour; others were in the hotel lobby awaiting the evening's awards
banquet. The hotel's staff gathered guests in the building's ballroom until
the tornado passed. Nobody was hurt, but buildings in the area were
variously damaged. The hotel was subsequently evacuated, and the remainder
of the conference was canceled. [SERO Public Affairs, 4/20]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Shenandoah NP (VA) - Reinstitution of Prescribed Fire Program
Prescribed fire is again being used in the park following an absence of 18
years. Some well-intentioned but inconclusive testing of prescribed fire was
conducted in the park, primarily in the Big Meadows area, in the late 1970s,
but was not again used until this month. A prescribed burn was conducted in
Fox Hollow on April 14th to reduce hazardous fuels that had accumulated in
the area and to clear the vista of encroaching brush and assorted woody
species. Plans call for use of prescribed fire to help restore table
mountain pine, a fire-dependent species, to the slopes of its favored
Appalachian Mountain habitat, and for its possible use in several fuel
reduction projects in the fall. [Ginny Rousseau, CR, SHEN, 4/15]
