INCIDENTS
98-282 - Denali NP (AK) - Follow-up on Fatal Climbing Accident
The body of C.H., 21, of Seattle, Washington, an assistant guide for
Rainier Mountaineering, Inc., was found and recovered on June 13th.
Conditions had improved enough after a week of bad weather to permit the
launching of an aerial search. Ranger Roger Robinson spotted C.H.'s body
on Peter's Glacier at the 15,200-foot level of the mountain. The body was
recovered via a long line and mechanical "grabber" tool deployed from the
park's Lama helicopter. [Ken Kehrer, CR, DENA, 6/15]
98-287 - Frederick Law Olmstead NHS (MA) - Flooding
The northeaster that struck New England on Saturday, causing a state of
emergency to be declared in Boston, also struck the park very hard. Street
and site drainage systems were overwhelmed by the several inches of rain that
fell during Saturday afternoon and by the flash flood that ensued. The front
drive, courtyard and parking lot were completely washed out, and the basement
and lower vault were flooded with seven inches of standing water. The lower
vault houses approximately 15,000 historic landscape drawings by Frederick
Law Olmstead and his brothers, but all items have been stored more than two
feet above the floor. There was therefore no damage to the collection,
although some administrative files in the basement were damaged. A dozen
members of the park's staff were contacted and responded to the emergency.
The staff worked past midnight to move drawings out of the vault and remove
water and muck from the vault and basement. They also trenched and
sandbagged the courtyard, as heavy rains were forecast for Sunday. Cleanup
efforts continue. Damages, estimated so far at a total of about $50,000,
include the partial loss of the heating plant, loss of the fire suppression
system compressor and several custom shelving units and wall panels, damage
to an air conditioner, and erosion of the parking lot, front drive and
courtyard. [John Maounis, FRLA, 6/15]
98-288 - Mount Rainier NP (WA) - Rescues; Avalanche Fatality
Rangers found and rescued G.M., 33, and M.B., 34, from
Mount Rainier on June 15th after the two men called for help on their
cellular phone. One was hypothermic, the other was reported to be "cold but
mobile." It was the second time in less than a week that rangers had to save
climbers. A man was killed and seven other climbers were injured in an
avalanche last Thursday. Details are not yet available. [The Pocono Record,
