NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Thursday, October 29, 1998
INCIDENTS
98-612 - Gulf Islands NS (MS/FL) - Follow-up: Hurricane Georges
Work crews of skilled tradesmen made significant progress toward making Ship
Island structures habitable yesterday. Replacement hot water heaters were
installed and the water chlorinating system was nearly operational. Paneling
in some structures was removed and preparations were made to jack them up and
make them level. Building materials were transported to the island in the
park's LCM landing craft. A camp manager has been assigned to the incident,
bring the total number of personnel to 16. Crews will move to a camp on the
island today. Local volunteer interest is high. Once safety concerns are
mitigated, groups of volunteers may be used to remove mud, sand and debris
from historic Fort Massachusetts. The brick Civil War fort suffered
extensive damage to reproduction doors and embrasure shutters; museum and
cooperating association facilities were also seriously damaged. Volunteers
will be coordinated and supervised by the park's interpretive staff in
concert with the incident information officer. A film crew from the
Mississippi Department of Tourism has asked the park about shooting a video
on Ship Island. Their activities are not expected to affect IMT operations.

98-695 - Martin Luther King, Jr. (GA) - Homicide
Rangers were advised of a fight underway between two men near the
interpretive contact station at 8 a.m. on October 27th. The confrontation
culminated when D.O., 42, stabbed T.T., 39, in the chest.
When ranger Clark Moore arrived on scene, was being treated by local
fire and rescue units. Moore secured the crime scene. was taken to
Grady Hospital, where he later died from his wounds. D.O. has been charged
with the murder. Moore is investigating along with detectives from the
city's homicide unit. [Clark Moore, CR, MALU, 10/28]
98-696 - Grand Teton NP (WY) - Rescue
On the afternoon of October 12th, rangers received a phone call from B.L.
of Logan, Utah, reporting that her husband, Tom, had not returned
from a climb in the Tetons. B.L. left his residence in Logan on the night
of the 10th with plans to solo climb the next day, then return home that
evening. He left no information as to what route or peak he was intending to
climb, or at which parking area he would leave his vehicle. Rangers located
B.L.'s vehicle at the String Lake trailhead just before 5 p.m., thereby
narrowing down the search area to the central portion of the Teton Range.
Shortly thereafter, two rangers began an aerial search in the park contract
helicopter, with plans to fly primary trails and travel routes and to look
for an attractant such as smoke or a mirror flash. Ten minutes into the
flight, they spotted a white t-shirt hanging in a tree near the base of
Symmetry Couloir, southeast of Symmetry Spire. Although it turned out that
this shirt had nothing to do with the missing climber, it focused the aerial
search in this general area. Within two minutes, a solo climber was seen in
the upper reaches of a couloir west of Symmetry Spire. The individual
matched the description of the missing climber; he appeared to be injured and
unable to move. With daylight hours waning, the helicopter returned to the
Lupine Meadows helibase and was configured for a shorthaul rescue. One
ranger served as the shorthaul spotter while the other was lowered to the
scene via a 150-foot shorthaul line. The climber, who turned out to be
B.L., was stabilized and evacuated via shorthaul extraction, with a ranger
attending him. Just under three hours had elapsed since the first report.
This proved significant, as the search was begun with the knowledge that
B.L. had gone climbing somewhere in the Tetons and was likely in the
central portion of the Teton Range. It's estimated that a conventional,
technical ground rescue to the nearest landing zone would have required, at a
minimum, a team of 12 to 15 people, and would have extended well into the
following day. B.L. remains hospitalized with a fractured clavicle and
humerus, multiple fractures to the pelvis, and multiple abrasions and
contusions. He had fallen an undetermined distance on the afternoon of the
11th after reaching the summit of Symmetry Spire via the east ridge. [Colin
Campbell, CR, GRTE, 10/22]
98-697 - Yellowstone NP (WY) - Grizzly Bear Mauling
P.V.D.A., 31, and his wife, A.R., 27, both from Belgium,
were on a day hike on a spur of the Mount Holmes trail on September 5th when
Van Der Auwera surprised a grizzly bear sow and her yearling. The bears were
no more than 15 yards away. The sow charged P.V.D.A., threw him in the
air, then bit him in the right thigh. It took three hours for A.R. to
hike out for assistance. P.V.D.A. was short-hauled from the scene by
helicopter, brought to an ambulance, taken to Mammoth Hot Springs for initial
treatment, then flown to a hospital in Billings. Both the Mount Holmes and
Grizzly Lake trailheads were closed until September 9th. ["The Buffalo
Chip," RM Newsletter, YELL]
98-698 - Yellowstone NP (WY) - Bison Goring
L.H., 80, of Newport, Kentucky, was gored by a bull bison in the
Canyon cabin area around 9 p.m. on July 15th. L.H. was visiting the park
with his daughter and other friends and staying in one of the cabins. As
they were returning to their cabin that evening, they saw a bison next to the
cabin's stairs. The bison became very agitated when they approached.
L.H.'s daughter and other visitors quickly moved back, but L.H. was not
able to retreat as quickly. The bison charged, struck him, and threw him 15
feet into the air. His injuries included a broken right elbow and a deep
laceration to his left thigh. He was taken to a hospital in Cody for
treatment. This was the third such bison encounter of the summer. ["The
Buffalo Chip," RM Newsletter, YELL]
98-699 - Gettysburg NMP (PA) - Employee Injury
Maintenance worker Fred Redmond was injured by a falling snag while removing
hazard trees along a park trail near South Confederate Avenue on the morning
of October 27th. Redmond was standing about 20 feet from a front-end loader
and to one side as the operator knocked down a dead snag. That snag caught a
second snag, however, which struck Redmond on the back of the head, causing a
significant laceration and contusion. Rangers provided initial treatment; he
was then taken to a hospital in Gettysburg and admitted for overnight
observation for a suspected concussion. Redmond was released the following
day and is expected back at work on Saturday. [Pete Walzer, SPR, GETT,
