NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Monday, January 4, 1999
INCIDENTS
98-767 - Petersburg NB (VA) - Follow-up: Winter Storm Impacts
As of December 31st, the park's main unit was still closed. Power had been
restored to headquarters and the ranger station, but lines to the maintenance
facility and visitor center were still down. Power crews have been working
to restore power to residents in area communities who have been without
electricity since the day before Christmas. Members of the park staff are
clearing many downed trees and limbs from roads and trails. The City Point
and Five Forks units are open; Poplar Grove National Cemetery is closed and
will require at least a week's work before it can be reopened. [Mike Hill,
Superintendent, PETE, 12/31]
98-778 - Death Valley NP (CA) - Suicide
On December 1st, the park received a notice to be on the lookout for L.E.
of San Bernadino, who had told his landlord's husband that he
intended to kill himself at Mud Canyon inside the park. Attempts to find him
proved fruitless. On the morning of December 5th, however, park maintenance
worker Kit Oesterling spotted a car matching L.E.'s. Rangers Ron Rods
and Bill Fitzpatrick investigated and found L.E.'s body near the park
information wayside at Hell's Gate, about five miles east of Mud Canyon. It
appears that he died from a single gunshot wound to the head from a .45
caliber handgun. The county sheriff's office and county coroner have assumed
responsibility for the case. [Scot McElveen, Acting CR, DEVA, 12/29]

OPERATIONAL NOTES
Law Enforcement Medical Reports - Some parks submitting law enforcement
employee medical reports to the medical review officer in Atlanta are not
including the name of the park, making it difficult to get approvals/
disapprovals back to the parks in a timely manner. Medical reports should
include the name of the park, the name of the contact person at the park, and
the contact person's telephone and fax numbers. Anyone with questions should
contact Terrie Fajardo, chief of staffing, WASO, at 202-208-6288. [Linda
Canzanelli, Park Operations and Education]

Entries are listed no earlier than FOUR months before the event, EXCEPT in
