NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Monday, January 11, 1999
INCIDENTS
98-767 - Vicksburg NMP (MS) - Follow-up: Winter Storm Impacts
An estimated 60,000 park trees were damaged by the severe ice storm that
struck the South over the Christmas holiday. All park facilities lost power
on December 22nd, and the entire park was closed for five days due to downed
trees, sub-freezing temperatures and weakened, ice-laden branches.
Maintenance workers and rangers started the long clean-up process on the
Saturday after the storm as temperatures climbed above the freezing mark. A
passage was cut through downed trees for traffic, and the damage assessment
was begun. Park staff identified damage to 5,320 trees on or along the
park's tour road, 5,176 trees along trails and the park boundary, and 300
trees within the national cemetery. Damage to park facilities was limited to
the loss of guardrails on one bridge due to a fallen tree. The park tour
road was reopened to traffic on December 28th. The clean-up effort
continues. Much of it is very labor intensive, as thousands of broken
branches and leaning trees are situated in precarious positions. The tour
road and points of interest will be closed intermittently during clean-up
operations. The total effort will likely require more than 3,600 hours of
labor and incur costs of more than $120,000. [Greg Zeman, Chief of
Operations, VICK, 1/8]
99-3 - Hawaii Volcanoes NP (HI) - Serious Employee Injury
Maintenance worker Larry Moreno was involved in a serious on-the-job accident
at the park's auto shop facility on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 6th.
The shop's roof was being pressure washed prior to painting. Moreno went on
the roof to check on how the pressure washer was working and fell through a
plastic sky light into the shop storage area below. He was treated at the
scene by park personnel and county paramedics, then taken to Hilo Hospital.
Moreno suffered a fractured elbow, fractured wrist, lacerations on one leg,
and a compressed spine. He underwent surgery for the fractures on Thursday,
and will likely be in a traction device for the spinal injury. Additional
details to follow. [Jim Martin, Superintendent, HAVO, 1/8]
