INCIDENTS

99-148 - Everglades NP (FL) - Illegal HazMat Dumping

On April 5th, ranger Allen Etheridge found an illegal dump of paint products
and equipment along a road within park boundaries in the East Everglades.
The dump was immediately adjacent to park wetlands. He found hydraulic
hoses, nozzles, tarps, and more than 200 gallons of paint, primer, acrylics,
thinners and other unidentified chemicals. The material had been dumped
there during the previous 24 hours. Rangers and FBI agents investigated and
determined that the dump was on lands not yet acquired within the park's
boundary, so a Miami-Dade environmental crimes unit has taken the lead on the
investigation. Site clean-up was completed on April 7th. Fortunately, none
of the material had leaked or spilled from the containers. Several leads
have been obtained from the evidence recovered at the scene and suspects may
soon be identified. [Jim Sanborn, DR, EVER, 4/20]

99-149 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Pursuit; Drug Seizure

Border Patrol agents asked rangers for assistance in pursuit of a pickup
truck within the park on April 17th. Customs inspectors were also summoned,
and they used stop sticks to deflate the truck's left front tire. The
pursuit continued for four miles onto a dirt road near the border with
Mexico, at which point the driver lost control of the truck and abandoned it
50 yards off the road. A ranger chased the driver on foot for 500 yards, but
had to break off pursuit when he crossed the border into Mexico. Rangers
found 728.5 pounds of marijuana in the bed of the pickup under a fiberglass
bed cover. It's becoming common for drug traffickers to flee from
enforcement officials along the border. [Aniceto Olais, CR, ORPI, 4/20]

99-150 - Fort McHenry NM&HS (MD) - Special Event

Lennart and Helle Meri, the president and first lady of the Republic of
Estonia, visited Fort McHenry while on a visit to Baltimore on April 26th.
Park staff conducted a tour of the site and coordinated security with the
Secret Service. There were no incidents. [Rick Nolan, CR, FOMC, 4/27]

CURRENT SITUATION

Very high fire danger persists in Florida. Dry fuels, windy conditions and
afternoon thunderstorms will contribute to new starts and potential control
problems. High pressure over the upper Great Lakes region will keep fire
indices in that area very high for the next few days. [NICC Incident
Management Situation Report, 1000 MDT, 4/28]
