NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Monday, June 21, 1999
INCIDENTS
99-283 - Navajo NM (AZ) - Severe Storm
A severe thunderstorm passed over the park around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June
17th, dropping marble-sized hail and generating numerous lightning strikes.
One of the strikes ignited a large juniper tree near the park's storage yard.
The tree began to burn intensely; visitors reported the fire to park
personnel. Maintenance supervisor John Laughter responded with other
maintenance workers and a YCC crew and extinguished the fire. Despite the
intense hail and driving winds, no other damage occurred. [Rick Best, Acting
CR, NAVA, 6/19]
99-284 - Cape Hatteras NS (NC) - Possible Drowning
F.M. visited Bodie Island on June 15th with his wife and son. The
F.M.s were headed for the beach, but passing thunderstorms led Nags Head
Ocean Rescue to close the guarded beach at 1 p.m. The storms had passed by
1:30 p.m., and the F.M.s went out onto the beach. The beach had not yet
been reopened by lifeguards, however, because of other approaching storms.
As those storms came closer, F.M., who was bodysurfing, motioned to his
wife and son to return to the car. After 15 minutes in the vehicle, F.M.'s
wife, who is a nurse, returned to the beach, found her husband floating face
up in the ocean, and began CPR. Nags Head lifeguards and county paramedics
were summoned. F.M. was transported to Health East Medical Center in Nags
Head, where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. The medical examiner has
requested an autopsy. [CRO, CAHA, 6/18]
99-285 - Natchez Trace Parkway (MS/AL/TN) - MVA with Fatality
On June 17th, a 60-year-old male from Jackson, Mississippi, was killed in a
motor vehicle accident while traveling north along the parkway. The vehicle
left the road and hit a tree, and it appears that he fell asleep at the
wheel. The name is being withheld until the next of kin is notified. An
autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death. There were
no other occupants in the vehicle. [Tim Francis, ACR, NATR, 6/17]
99-286 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Narcotics Seizures
On May 23rd, an off-duty ranger saw a car veer off the highway into the
desert. When the ranger stopped to provide assistance, the single male driver
fled into the desert. Forty-nine pounds of marijuana were found in the
vehicle. On June 15th, rangers found and seized three backpacks containing
109 pounds of marijuana in the brush along Highway 85 within the park. [Jon
Young, PR, ORPI, 6/17]
