MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Monday, August 16, 1999
INCIDENTS
99-455 - Isle Royale NP (MI) - Rescue
B.S., 51, was camping at Moskey Basin with a group of Boy Scouts at
6 p.m. on the evening of August 11th when he began experiencing chest pain
and other heart attack symptoms. By chance, ranger April Wood was on boat
patrol in the area; she was flagged down by scouts sent to get help. Wood
provided medical care while awaiting the arrival of a carryout crew.
B.S.'s condition continued to deteriorate. An air ambulance from Thunder
Bay, Canada, arrived just before 8 p.m. and performed a difficult pickup from
a small rock outcropping on the shore of Lake Superior. B.S. survived,
but remains hospitalized in Canada, suffering from atrial fibrillation. This
was the park's third medical emergency in ten days, all of which required air
ambulance transport to Canada. There were no such transports during the
previous five years. [Peter Armington, CR, ISRO, 8/15]
99-456 - Death Valley NP (CA) - Assault with Deadly Weapon
On the night of August 13th, dispatch received a 911 call reporting and
assault with a deadly weapon that had occurred in Indian Village. The victim
told investigating rangers that her brother had struck her on the head with a
rock, and that she was carrying her 20-month-old child when the assault took
place. The man, who was reported to be intoxicated, was known to rangers, as
he'd been involved in another domestic violence case only two weeks
previously. He also had a felony warrant out on him. The supervisor on
scene accordingly requested backup from the resident California Highway
Patrol officer. When that officer and an Inyo County deputy stationed 60
miles away arrived on scene, a search for the assailant was begun. Ranger
John Anderson found and arrested him without incident. [CRO, DEVA, 8/15]
99-457 - Gateway NRA (NY/NJ) - Attempted Rape; Three Arrests
Park Police dispatch received a report of a reckless driver in a government
vehicle at the Coast Guard housing area at Fort Wadsworth at 7:30 a.m. on
July 17th. Officer Holmes located the vehicle and contacted the driver,
C.B., who said he was looking for his wife. While this traffic
stop was underway, dispatch received a call for police assistance at the Navy
Lodge at Fort Wadsworth. The complainant reported an attempted rape that had
just occurred in one of the Coast Guard housing units. Acting on the
assumption that the two incidents were related, officers brought the 39-year-
old victim to the traffic stop, where she positively identified C.B. as one
of the people associated with the assault. She reported that she'd met C.B.
at a Manhattan night club early that morning and had accompanied C.B. and two
other men back to his home in Fort Wadsworth for breakfast and a subsequent
ride home. After having consensual sexual relations with C.B., a second
member of the trio, D.W., entered the room naked and attempted
forcible sex. The woman managed to get away, passing the third man, G.P.,
who was also naked. The victim was taken to the house where the
assault reportedly occurred, where she positively identified D.W..
D.W. then identified G.P. as the third man. Officers went to G.P.'s
house, also at Fort Wadsworth; he agreed to accompany the officers to an
office for further investigation. While getting dressed, however, he picked
up a loaded firearm. The officers disarmed him. All three men were
arrested. D.W. was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, and
unlawful imprisonment; C.B. with criminal facilitation; G.P. with criminal
possession of a weapon. Further investigation revealed that D.W. and
G.P. were Army personnel living in the Coast Guard housing area under the
terms of an MOU. C.B. was an out-of-town guest of D.W. [Det. Sgt. John
Marigliano, USPP, GATE, 7/21]

INTERCHANGE
Saguaro NP - The park is looking for a home for a bay molly mule. The mule
has had minimal training and is considered too flighty to be in a pack
string. She is seven years old, weights a thousand pounds, and is 15 hands
high. If you're interested, contact Pat Haddad at 520-733-5131 by August
31st.
C&O Canal NHP - The park is seeking a surplus Motorola Micor high band feed
repeater equal to or compatible with a Model C73RCB-3105ET to replace one
struck by lightning. If you have one of these old repeaters, contact the
park at 301-714-2235. They'll come and get it or arrange shipping, depending
