  ALMANAC

On this day in 1962, the most devastating extra-tropical storm in U.S.
history raked the eastern seaboard. It discouraged projected
development on coastal barrier islands like Assateague Island in
Maryland and Virginia and was a primary factor leading to the
establishment of Assateague Island National Seashore three years
  later.

  INCIDENTS

00-075 - Pea Ridge NMP (AR) - Drug Laboratory

On February 25th, the NPS was contacted and asked to assist sheriff's
detectives with service of a felony warrant at the park. The person
wanted - C.G., 37, of Garfield - was wanted on Idaho warrants
for weapons and drug violations. C.G. and his wife, B.G., 31,
were renting a house surrounded on three sides by the park, with a
right-of-way across the park for the sole purpose of reaching the
house. C.G. and B.C., 19, also of Garfield, were
found in an outbuilding south of the house. Both were trying to leave
the building when officers came out of the park to serve the warrant.
A large, clandestine methamphetamine lab was discovered inside the
building, with chemicals being prepared to make three pounds of the
drug, valued at $60,000. Discovered in the house were ammunition,
handguns, rifles, pornography, sex paraphernalia and weapons equipped
with laser sights. The house also had a surveillance camera placed so
that occupants could monitor activity in, across and through the park
and determine if anyone was approaching the house. As the C.G.'s and
B.C. were being arrested, a man approached the house in a truck
via the park. When he saw the officers, he attempted to flee by
backing his truck out onto a county road. He was chased down on foot
by a ranger and taken into custody. A second vehicle then entered the
park and headed toward the house. One of the two female occupants,
Kelli Dutton, was arrested on unrelated charges. The lab is the eighth
and largest methamphetamine lab found in the county so far this year.
The NPS will continue to assist the sheriff's department with the
investigation. [Guy Whitmer, SA, MWRO, 3/3]
