NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2000
ALMANAC
On this date in 1862, Confederate troops from Texas defeated Federal
troops from Colorado at the Battle of Glorieta Pass, New Mexico
Territory, but the destruction of their supplies forced their return
to Texas, ending their invasion of the West. The battlefield is part
of Pecos National Historical Park, New Mexico.
INCIDENTS
99-695 - San Juan NHS (PR) - Follow-up: Ship Grounding
Crews worked through last night to prepare the 564-foot Russian-
flagged freighter Sergo Zakariadze for refloating. Three tugs hooked
up to the ship around 10 p.m. and the pumps ran until high tide at 2
a.m. this morning. The vessel floated, but the front third evidently
remained firmly lodged on the park's breakwater. Scraping and creaking
of the hull against the breakwater could be heard as the ship rocked
back and forth. The towline on one tug broke, striking a contract
employee in the face. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. All
efforts to move the ship were halted. Options currently under
consideration include removing more cement from the ship's holds or
pulling with more tugs. [Mark Hardgrove, SAJU, 3/28]
