NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Thursday, May 25, 2000
ALMANAC
On this date in 1910, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew together for the
only time at Huffman Prairie Flying Field, now part of Dayton Aviation
Heritage National Historical Park, Ohio.
INCIDENTS
00-222 - Andersonville NHS (GA) - Structural Fire
Two wildland fires started in the park on Wednesday afternoon,
apparently the result of a trash fire started by a nearby resident and
aggravated by gusty winds and drought conditions. Although the fires
were kept to just a few acres each, a third fire later in the
afternoon spread to a park maintenance storage building. Although
state forestry and Andersonville VFD crews responded immediately, the
building was lost. The approximate value of the contents has been
placed at about $10,000 and included brand new signs and parts for the
POW Museum's HVAC system. [Fred Boyles, Superintendent, ANDE, 5/25]
00-223 - Independence NHP (PA) - Demonstration; Arrests
On July 3, 1999, 95 supporters of Mumia Abu Jumal were arrested at the
Liberty Bell Pavilion for acts of civil disobedience. The court cases
came to a successful conclusion recently after over nine months of
effort by park staff and the U.S. Attorney's Office. Eighty-one of the
demonstrators pled guilty and paid $250 fines; seven went to trial,
were found guilty, and were fined $275 each and placed on probation
with travel restrictions for a year; bench warrants are out for the
remainder for failing to appear in court. [Gregg Tinkham, Acting LES,
INDE, 5/24]
00-224 - Haleakala NP (HI) - Rescue
On the evening of May 20th, C.C., 21, jumped from the Ohe'o
bridge into the pool 50 feet below. She landed on her back and
subsequently complained of back pain. Several of her friends pulled
her out of the water and onto a rock ledge below the highway bridge,
then summoned help. Ranger Erik Larson and local fire, police and EMS
personnel responded. Larson, an EMT, began medical treatment and
continued it until paramedics arrived on scene. While = was being
prepared for extrication, Larson and a county police officer set up a
high-angle raising system to lift her to the roadway and a waiting
ambulance. Larson and district ranger Greg Moss had just conducted a
technical rescue training class that included fire and police
personnel. C.C. was taken to a medical center in Hana, where she was
treated and released. [Karen Newton, CR, HALE, 5/24]
00-225 - Olympic NP (WA) - Assist; Drug Arrest
The Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team (OPNET) recently
asked for help from special agent Clay Butler in conducting
surveillance of an anticipated drug transaction in a wooded area. On
May 20th, Butler saw one person place narcotics in the identified area
and a second person retrieve the package. These observations resulted
in the arrest of a Washington state prison corrections officer, the
wife of a prison inmate, and the seizure of four ounces of heroin, a
quantity of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. [Mike Butler, SA, OLYM,
5/21]
